Review: Epos B20 USB streaming microphone

av Henric Brandt

The ability to create podcasts or record high-quality voiceovers for game streaming platforms like Twitch is increasingly sought after. When evaluating streaming microphones, key considerations include audio fidelity and portability. This review assesses the EPOS B20 against these criteria and its competitive landscape.

Epos, the Danish brand, is primarily recognized for its headphones. The B20 microphone arrives in packaging consistent with their brand, featuring secure foam padding. Upon unboxing, two immediate impressions stand out. First, the microphone exhibits a robust and substantial build quality, complemented by a premium surface finish. Second, Epos has engineered a compact and streamlined design, facilitating convenient storage in a computer bag. This initial assessment is highly favorable.

The inclusion of a detachable base immediately elevates the B20 among streaming microphones, even before evaluating its audio performance. Once the base is attached, the microphone maintains stability on a desk, requiring only a simple connection to begin operation.

Connecting the microphone to a MacBook Pro resulted in immediate recognition and operational readiness. The microphone offers several controls for adjusting gain and selecting from four recording patterns: Cardioid (optimal for single-person recording), Omnidirectional (capturing sound from all directions), Stereo, and Bidirectional (suitable for interviews).

The conveniently located front and back controls facilitate easy access and adjustment. The following audio test demonstrates the performance of each recording mode:

The Cardioid mode delivers a focused and clear sound, effectively minimizing ambient noise, making it well-suited for solo podcasts or game streams. The Bidirectional mode is adequate for two-person recordings; however, the audio quality exhibits a slight reduction in clarity, attributable to the microphone’s inability to be simultaneously directed at both speakers.

Epos offers downloadable software on their website. Regrettably, this software is currently exclusive to PC, which is a significant drawback. While the B20 exhibits considerable merit, this limitation prevents a “must-have” recommendation, given that many content creators utilize macOS.

In conclusion, the overall rating remains high, reflecting the B20’s quality construction, ease of use, excellent sound reproduction, and commendable portability. The B20 from Epos is recommended with confidence.
