Review: eFootball PES 2020

av senses.se

PES (Pro Evolution Soccer) has historically been Konami‘s challenger to EA’s dominant FIFA franchise. However, in recent years, EA appears to have taken the lead in innovation, while Konami’s development has seemed less pronounced, both within the PES series and across other franchises. PES 2020, incorporating the current buzzword eFootball into its title, presents a somewhat mixed experience. It offers notable strengths, but also some significant shortcomings.

Strengths

Two aspects that particularly stand out this year are the game’s content and its ball physics. Dribbling, shot fakes, and ball control have been refined, offering a slightly improved experience compared to previous iterations. While not flawless, the inclusion of Andrés Iniesta as an advisor has demonstrably impacted the gameplay. However, the controls can still feel somewhat sluggish, preventing a completely satisfactory implementation (more on this below). On the other hand, the ball’s movement and weight feel realistic and provide immense satisfaction when striking, whether for powerful shots or precise, targeted headers. At its best, PES 2020 delivers moments of exceptional virtual football.

Another highlight is the myClub mode, which has evolved into a comprehensive football management simulator. Players can meticulously control and experiment with virtually every aspect of team management, from individual player development, positioning, transfers (sales and loans), to scouting, agent interactions, manager selection, strategic formations, and more. It’s both engaging and deeply intricate for players seeking mastery. Furthermore, PES 2020 offers a significantly more generous experience than FIFA 20 and its FUT (Ultimate Team) counterpart, which often necessitates extensive grinding or substantial financial investment to acquire competitive players via card packs.

The graphical presentation has received an upgrade; PES 2020 presents a visually appealing experience comparable to broadcast quality (from a distance). However, finer details, player faces, and stadium environments do not quite reach the fidelity seen in FIFA. The audio, unfortunately, remains a weak point. While the commentary has been slightly updated and demonstrates improved awareness of the on-field action, it ultimately falls short due to repetitive phrases and a lack of insightful analysis. The commentary can also feel disjointed, with inaccurate or irrelevant observations. Konami has struggled with this aspect for several years, and progress remains limited.

Weaknesses

From a gameplay perspective, PES 2020 retains its core appeal as a simulation of football where dynamic and unpredictable scenarios frequently occur. However, two specific aspects detract from the overall experience in this year’s edition:

PES 2020
Inconsistent AI and occasional sluggish player movement detract from the experience.

1) The game has adopted a slower, more tactical pace reminiscent of FIFA. Players can sometimes exhibit delayed reactions and execution, resulting in a less responsive and somewhat cumbersome feel, losing some of the engaging, arcade-style authenticity that was previously a hallmark of the series.

2) The AI exhibits inconsistencies, even after several patches. Computer-controlled teammates in defensive roles can exhibit questionable decision-making, and seemingly straightforward passes and attacking opportunities can be inexplicably ignored. Moreover, situations arise where world-class players struggle to maintain possession against weaker opponents, undermining the sense of realism.

Final Verdict on PES 2020

Overall, eFootball PES 2020 presents a mixed experience this year. At its peak, it captures the passion and excitement of football, showcasing memorable player moments, strategic plays, and impressive technical skill. However, these highs are often countered by sluggish player movement, inconsistent AI behavior, uninspired commentary, and unappealing menu design. Furthermore, the frequency of replays, requiring multiple button presses to skip, disrupts the flow of gameplay.

Konami is actively releasing patches (three updates were deployed during the review period), but significant improvements are needed in PES 2021 to maintain its competitive position. Currently, the game’s increasing similarity to FIFA risks diluting its unique identity. Konami should prioritize addressing the long-standing issues with the commentary, modernizing the menus, and restoring a more vibrant and responsive gameplay experience with an arcade feel. A distinct alternative to the FIFA franchise will always find an audience, even in the face of competitors with greater resources and licensing agreements.
