Review: EarFun Tune Pro

av Björn Alsborger

EarFun is a manufacturer with a relatively low profile in the Swedish market. We previously reviewed their EarFun Air Pro 4 in-ear headphones (EarFun Air Pro 4) and were impressed by the value proposition. Now, they are launching the Tune Pro headphones, aiming to compete in the sub-SEK 1,000 ANC headphone segment. We’ve previously evaluated contenders in this category, such as the Soundcore Space One and its higher-end counterpart, the Soundcore Space One Pro. Let’s examine how the Tune Pro performs.

The package includes the headphones, a USB-C cable, a 3.5 mm cable, and a concise quick start guide.

The headphones feature a black finish with silver accents. One earcup houses a USB-C port and an ANC mode selection button, while the other includes a power button, volume controls, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The construction utilizes primarily plastic, but the headphones maintain a reasonably robust feel.

The earcups offer 45 degrees of rotation and can be folded for storage, facilitating portability. Regrettably, a carrying case is not included, and the rotation/folding mechanism is plastic. While this raises some durability concerns, particularly when stowing the headphones in a bag, they withstood typical travel conditions during our testing period without incident. However, the absence of metal reinforcement in this potentially stressed area remains a point of concern.

The fit is surprisingly comfortable. The earcup cushions are sufficiently soft and provide a secure seal around the ears. The headband padding is also well-executed, ensuring comfort even during extended listening sessions. Testers with varying head sizes, including those with larger heads, reported a comfortable fit.

Before discussing features and audio quality, it’s essential to highlight the impressive battery performance. The specifications claim 120 hours of battery life without ANC and 80 hours with ANC enabled. Our testing corroborates these claims; the battery life is exceptional.

The battery performance is remarkable, and a quick 10-minute charge provides approximately 10–15 hours of playtime. A full charge from empty requires about 3 hours.

Regarding audio quality, we began our evaluation with Billie Eilish’s “bad guy” to assess bass response. Many headphones in this price range exhibit excessive bass, which often detracts from the overall sound. However, the Tune Pro does not suffer from this issue. In fact, the bass response is somewhat subdued. The initial impression was rather underwhelming. Through testing with various genres, we observed a general lack of both bass and treble.

Prompted by this initial disappointment, we explored the EQ settings within the companion app. Adjusting the EQ significantly improved the sound quality. The app also offers a personalized profile creation feature based on individual hearing sensitivity to different frequencies.

This personalized approach proved beneficial, resulting in a noticeably improved audio experience compared to the default settings.

However, we achieved the best results by manually adjusting the EQ, creating a V-shaped curve to boost both bass and treble frequencies.

With tailored EQ settings, the Tune Pro delivered a more enjoyable listening experience. While genre-specific adjustments may be necessary, it’s possible to achieve good, and even very good, sound quality through careful EQ manipulation.

The headphones support SBC and AAC codecs but lack high-resolution codec support such as LDAC or aptX. Despite the “Hi-Res Audio” designation on the packaging, this capability is only available when using a wired connection.

EarFun claims the Tune Pro’s ANC can reduce ambient noise by up to 45 dB. To assess its performance in real-world conditions, we tested the headphones on a flight.

The ANC proved reasonably effective, attenuating a significant portion of ambient noise, though not achieving complete silence. However, upon disembarking, we encountered an issue: while the ANC dampened the sound of a leaf blower, intermittent gusts produced noticeable and distracting noises, more pronounced than with other ANC headphones we have tested.

The app offers a “Wind Noise Cancellation” setting to mitigate wind noise, and it is indeed effective. However, engaging this mode introduces a trade-off: other sounds that were previously masked by the regular ANC become more prominent. The user must choose between wind noise reduction and minimizing other ambient disturbances.

The differences between the “Comfort ANC” and “Strong ANC” modes are subtle. The “Ambient Sound” mode, designed to allow external sounds to pass through (e.g., to hear a cashier), functions as intended, but the sound quality is not particularly natural, making it a less desirable option unless absolutely necessary.

A notable feature is that the ANC remains active even when using a wired connection, which is not always the case with other headphones.

EarFun includes a “Theater Mode” intended to create a surround sound effect, simulating a more immersive listening experience. While such effects often prove gimmicky, this implementation is surprisingly decent. Activating this mode disables custom EQ settings, but the overall sound remains acceptable. While not revolutionary, it’s worth exploring.

Conclusion

The EarFun Tune Pro has a suggested retail price of $69, or approximately SEK 650. At this price point, you receive headphones with exceptional battery life, a comfortable fit, and adequate ANC performance. With careful EQ adjustments, they can also deliver genuinely good sound quality. However, the out-of-the-box sound profile was underwhelming.

Overall, we are favorably impressed with the EarFun Tune Pro. While the predominantly plastic construction and lack of a travel case are drawbacks, the price point makes it difficult to withhold a recommendation.
