Review: Drakar och Demoner – Regelboken (Role-Playing Game)

by Henric Brandt

TL;DR

Love Drakar och Demoner? This hardcover Rulebook is a quality upgrade, boasting a sturdy build with premium paper. However, be aware that most of its content mirrors the core set's softcover rulebook, with only a few extra pages including an adventure and character sheet. Priced closely to the core set, buying it separately might even cost *more* once you factor in dice. While the hardcover offers durability for serious players, the core set delivers more bang for your buck with added essentials. It's a decent purchase, especially if you already have dice, but a slightly lower price would make it a standout option for newcomers. Dive into the full review to see if this durable version is right for you!

It’s well known that I’m a fan of Drakar och Demoner, and I recently reviewed Drakar och Demoner: Monsterboken (Monster Book). Now, I have a bound copy of Drakar och Demoner: Regelboken (Rulebook) for review, and while the quality is consistent with previous releases, its value proposition warrants consideration.

This hardcover rulebook contains 125 pages. The content, up to page 112, is identical to the rulebook included in the core set. The remaining pages feature an adventure scenario and a character sheet designed for scanning and printing. As with Drakar och Demoner: Monsterboken, the book boasts high-quality covers and a pleasing tactile experience thanks to its thick paper stock.

Drakar och Demoner: Regelboken is priced only slightly lower than the core set. Factoring in the cost of dice, purchasing the rulebook separately can potentially be more expensive. While those who already possess dice may find it marginally cheaper, the core set provides significantly more value with its included character sheets, dice, pre-written adventures, and cardboard miniatures. However, the Drakar och Demoner: Regelboken’s hardcover format offers increased durability compared to the softcover version within the core set, potentially justifying the investment for dedicated players.

In conclusion, I can still recommend Drakar och Demoner: Regelboken. A slightly reduced price point would solidify its position as a compelling entry point for players seeking to experience Drakar och Demoner without the full investment of the core set.
