Review: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

av Henric Brandt

Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Wong (Benedict Wong) intervene to rescue America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), a burgeoning superheroine, from a colossal, enraged octopus. This encounter initiates an extraordinary adventure, as America possesses the unique ability to open portals between universes, making her a target for those who seek to exploit her powers. Doctor Strange seeks counsel from Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), a decision that precipitates unforeseen consequences and places the entire multiverse in grave peril.

The original Doctor Strange film debuted in 2016, marking a significant interval between solo installments within the MCU. Nevertheless, the character of Doctor Strange has maintained a prominent presence in subsequent films, playing a crucial role, most recently in Spider-man: No Way Home. Despite this, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness gives the impression of having elided critical developments in the character’s narrative arc, particularly concerning Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Mordo’s transformation into a villain was foreshadowed in the first film’s post-credit sequence, yet this plot thread remains largely unresolved. In this film, Doctor Strange seemingly possesses prior knowledge of Mordo’s villainous status and their shared history, elements that are not explicitly depicted. This creates a sense that the narrative progression resembles a third solo film, rather than a direct sequel.

It is speculated that creative differences may have contributed to director Scott Derrickson‘s (director of the first film) departure, suggesting a divergence in vision for the sequel. Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Drag me to Hell, Spider-man 1-3), a director renowned for his expertise in both horror and superhero genres, assumed directorial duties, imbuing the film with his distinctive stylistic flair.

Raimi’s direction significantly elevates Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, particularly in light of the script’s sprawling nature. The film navigates numerous narrative threads, demanding a significant degree of familiarity with the WandaVision series and the broader MCU canon. This reliance on prior knowledge may prove challenging for viewers less acquainted with the interconnected narrative. In contrast, Spider-man: Far From Home successfully integrated references to the wider universe while remaining accessible as a standalone film. Prior viewing of WandaVision is particularly crucial for comprehending Wanda’s motivations and actions within the film.

A further concern arises from narrative inconsistencies that become apparent upon closer scrutiny. Certain character actions lack plausible repercussions, and information transfer occurs with undue ease, undermining the narrative’s internal logic. While specificity is avoided to prevent spoilers, these issues detract from the overall coherence.

The visual effects are commendably executed, and the diverse universes depicted are visually distinct and aesthetically compelling. However, a particular sequence set on a rooftop exhibits a reliance on computer-generated environments, detracting from the immersive quality. The prevalence of entirely computer-animated environments, in lieu of physical set construction, becomes noticeable in this instance.

Despite the aforementioned criticisms, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness possesses redeeming qualities. The film maintains a brisk pace, incorporates humor effectively, and features noteworthy supporting performances (details of which will be withheld). While not reaching the same level of impact as Spider-man: No Way Home, it offers an intriguing glimpse into potential future developments within the MCU.

Sam Raimi’s signature directorial style, characterized by a blend of horror and humor, is evident throughout the film and proves to be a successful fit. The film also exhibits a willingness to embrace darker and more intense elements, warranting caution for parents considering bringing young children (under 11) to the cinema.

In conclusion, despite certain shortcomings, the film contains commendable aspects, making Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness a worthwhile cinematic experience. Its popularity is underscored by its record as the most-watched film of 2022 in Swedish cinemas, attracting 143,000 viewers during its opening weekend.
