Review: DJI – Osmo Action 6

by Henric Brandt

TL;DR

DJI's Osmo Action 6 is a powerful and versatile action camera that punches above its weight, especially considering its competitive price. It boasts impressive stabilization, excellent battery life even in extreme cold, and robust build quality. The Adventure Combo offers fantastic value with useful accessories like an extension pole and charging case. While its night mode could be better, its LOG recording capability, extensive app control, 20m waterproofing, and webcam function make it a compelling choice for everything from casual adventurers to professional productions. It even holds its own against pricier competitors like the GoPro Hero 13 in key areas like battery and waterproofing. Ready to see if this is the action camera for you? Dive into the full review!

Introduction

Osmo Action 6 is the latest action camera from DJI. For this review, it’s notable that the reviewer’s last experience with an action camera was with the competitor GoPro Hero 4 from 2014, providing a compelling opportunity to assess the technological advancements over the past twelve years. While a direct comparison between the Osmo Action 6 and the GoPro Hero 13, which would be the most relevant current model, was not feasible, extensive research and analysis were conducted to facilitate a reasonable comparative discussion. Furthermore, the Osmo Action 6 underwent rigorous testing across a variety of weather conditions and operational scenarios.

Versions and Accessories

The Osmo Action 6 is available in two distinct versions. The camera unit itself is identical across both, but the included accessories differ. This review focuses on the Adventure Combo, which bundles the camera with a charging case, an extension pole (extending to 1.5 meters), a helmet mount, three batteries, and a charging cable. The Standard Combo, priced 1200 kronor lower, includes only one battery, a helmet mount, and a charging cable. Given that individual batteries retail for approximately 400 kronor each, the Adventure Combo represents a highly cost-effective option.

First Impressions and Build Quality

Following DJI’s characteristic design ethos, all components arrive neatly packaged in a compact and sleek box. Its substantial weight suggests robust build quality. Initial setup involved unboxing the components and immediately charging the batteries. The charging case is slightly larger than that for the DJI Mic 3, yet it remains conveniently portable for an inner pocket. The extension pole is compact and easily transportable, resulting in a fully functional action camera kit with minimal footprint.

Mounting and Usage

The camera attaches securely via a combination of clips and a magnet. Even during dynamic movements, the mounting system provided unwavering security, eliminating any concerns about detachment. Battery insertion and camera startup revealed an intuitive interface. The menu system is user-friendly, allowing for straightforward in-camera adjustments. Additionally, seamless connectivity with the DJI app on a smartphone enables more extensive configuration. This allows for comprehensive adjustments, including wide-angle settings, aperture (F/2.0–F/4.0), and ISO between 100–6400. A standout feature is the camera’s ability to record in LOG, which significantly enhances color grading flexibility. This capability facilitates seamless integration with footage from other cameras and contributes to a more professional aesthetic. This functionality elevates the camera’s utility, making it suitable for professional productions such as feature films, music videos, or other advanced projects.

Test 1: Cold and Timelapse

The initial test involved deploying the Osmo Action 6 at one of our greenhouse test facilities. The camera was exposed to temperatures ranging from zero to minus six degrees Celsius for six hours while recording a timelapse. Remarkably, after this duration, the battery level remained at 50%. Utilizing a lightweight tripod, the extension pole elevated the camera to its maximum height. Despite significant wind, the footage exhibited impressive stability. The camera’s stabilization technology proved highly effective for timelapse capture.

Clips from this test are available in the video below.

Test 2: Walking, Running, and Slow Motion

Subsequent testing involved walking and running while operating the camera. With the camera mounted at the very end of the extension pole, its stabilization performance mirrored that of a dedicated gimbal. This provided an excellent opportunity to evaluate the slow-motion capabilities. Here, the camera again impresses, offering 120 fps in 4K and a robust 240 fps in 1080p. These specifications enable the capture of high-quality super slow-motion sequences without significant resolution compromise.

Night Mode

The camera features a dedicated night mode, which presented the only area where performance was less than fully impressive. While it provides a discernible improvement, the impact is not profoundly significant. Its efficacy is best observed in low-light conditions, rather than near-total darkness.

Audio Quality

The audio quality of the Osmo Action 6 proved surprisingly robust. At approximately half a meter distance, the audio capture was exceptionally clear. While clarity diminished at greater distances, vocal intelligibility remained strong. Seamless integration with DJI Mic 3 microphones further enhances audio fidelity, complementing the camera’s video capabilities.

Battery Life and Storage

Prior to discussing minor areas for improvement concerning the Osmo Action 6, this review will detail some key technical specifications. Battery life stands out as particularly impressive. The manufacturer claims approximately four hours of video recording, however, during independent testing, the camera performed a six-hour timelapse in cold conditions without interruption. The device includes 50 GB of internal memory, with the option to insert a microSD card for expanded storage. Users can utilize the integrated memory or expand storage via a microSD card. It is crucial to select a high-speed card to ensure optimal data writing performance, as high-resolution, high-frame-rate recording, such as 120 fps in 4K, generates substantial data.

Waterproofing and Webcam Function

The Osmo Action 6 boasts waterproofing down to a depth of 20 meters, and unlike many older cameras, it negates the need for a separate underwater housing. It can be deployed directly in aquatic environments without issue. When transferring recorded footage, connecting the camera to a computer revealed an unexpected yet valuable feature: its capability to function as a webcam. This proves highly convenient, offering high-resolution video and clear audio.

Disadvantages

While significant drawbacks with the Osmo Action 6 are minimal, a minor enhancement would be the inclusion of a lens cap and a compact carrying pouch within the Adventure Combo. Such additions would render the package truly comprehensive for diverse scenarios. Without these, there’s a perceived risk of lens damage during handling. While aftermarket lens caps are readily available, their exclusion from the initial package is noteworthy.

Comparison with GoPro Hero 13

How does the Osmo Action 6 fare against the GoPro Hero 13, and which ultimately stands out? While a direct comparison of stabilization was not possible, initial observations suggest the Osmo Action 6 performs favorably. It offers superior battery life, variable aperture control, double the waterproofing depth (20 meters vs. 10 meters), and is approximately a thousand kronor more affordable than its competitor. The GoPro Hero 13, conversely, features a higher resolution of 5.3K and, according to specifications, HDR. Ultimately, the choice, as ever, hinges on individual preferences, specific requirements, and project demands.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Osmo Action 6 from DJI earns a strong recommendation. It represents a remarkably advanced and compact device offered at a highly competitive price point. For users seeking a high-performing, user-friendly action camera with extensive features and customizable settings, this model is an excellent choice. Engineered to operate in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, it proves versatile across diverse environments, and its performance continues to impress during post-production.
