Review: Disney Dreamlight Valley

av Henric Brandt

Disney Dreamlight Valley offers a unique adventure, transporting players through a magical portal to a realm inhabited by beloved Disney characters. A mysterious darkness has enveloped the valley, causing its residents to lose their memories. As the player’s avatar, you possess the power to dispel this encroaching evil, gradually restoring the characters’ recollections. The primary objective involves rebuilding the shattered valley and rescuing its missing inhabitants, who now wander aimlessly, devoid of their past.

We previewed Disney Dreamlight Valley approximately eighteen months ago during its beta phase. The core narrative remains straightforward, as the gameplay centers around activities such as constructing your dwelling, interacting with characters, fishing, participating in mini-games, cultivating resources, and completing various tasks. Unlocking new characters throughout the game introduces additional content and gameplay possibilities. The cooking mechanic, particularly alongside Mickey Mouse, offers a nostalgic charm, reminiscent of classic Disney cookbooks.

While each character features recorded voice lines, they are often brief, with the majority of dialogue presented as text. Although more extensive voice acting would be preferable, the existing voice work effectively captures the essence of the original characters.

Players can fully customize their avatars and acquire diverse clothing options, including hats and shoes, throughout the game. With over 40 distinct worlds to explore and 35 characters to unlock, the game continues to expand with regular updates. Recent additions include content inspired by the Laugh Floor from Monsters Inc.

One potential drawback of Disney Dreamlight Valley lies in the relatively small scale of the explorable areas within each world. While the environments are visually appealing and consistent with the game’s overall aesthetic, their limited size can create a sense of confinement. Furthermore, the gameplay loop can become somewhat repetitive over time, as core activities tend to iterate on similar mechanics.

Despite these minor shortcomings, Disney Dreamlight Valley remains a worthwhile experience, particularly for families. The interaction with iconic Disney characters within their respective realms proves surprisingly engaging. While some technical limitations are apparent, they do not significantly detract from the overall enjoyment of the game.
