We dedicated a significant amount of time to playing Diablo 3 upon its release for Mac and PC in 2012. Despite frustrations with aspects such as the mandatory online connection and the controversial auction house, we persevered. When the game was subsequently released for consoles, we questioned how well it would perform on the then nearly seven-year-old PS3. The answer was that it played exceptionally well, especially with its enjoyable local co-op mode. Now, it has arrived on current-generation consoles, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (along with PS3 and 360), incorporating the Reaper of Souls expansion under the title Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition.
The PS4’s enhanced processing power and 8 GB of RAM prove beneficial, as Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition leverages these capabilities effectively. The environments exhibit improved detail, and the lighting effects are noticeably superior to the PS3 version, although they may not quite match the highest settings achievable on a high-end PC. While the character models may not represent the pinnacle of modern character design, the heroes and enemies are sufficiently detailed for the fast-paced hack-n-slash gameplay that defines Diablo 3.
Players can experience the entirety of Diablo 3, progressing from the beginning through Acts 4 and 5, which constitute the Reaper of Souls expansion. Alternatively, players with existing Diablo 3 characters can start directly at Act 4. For players new to Diablo 3 on PS4, Blizzard has implemented a feature allowing the export of characters from other platforms following the latest patch. Furthermore, players can now link their PSN and Blizzard accounts.
Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition performs admirably on the PS4. Local co-op remains a highlight, and the PS4’s increased power generally ensures smooth gameplay. However, during particularly intense encounters with numerous enemies on screen, the game can experience slowdown and frame rate drops. Occasional graphical anomalies and minor glitches, including crashes, may also occur, though we anticipate these issues will be addressed in future patches.
For enthusiasts of co-op gaming, dungeon-crawlers, and the Diablo series in particular, Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition represents a worthwhile purchase on PS4. While it does not introduce revolutionary changes, it provides an engaging and entertaining experience, especially when enjoyed with up to three friends locally. The game features a well-balanced loot system that ensures fair distribution among players based on level and character type, promoting cooperative gameplay.
