Review: Darq

av Henric Brandt

Update: The review of Darq on next-gen is now available (Playstation 5 / Xbox Series X).

Inside remains a personal favorite within the puzzle genre, and I consider it to be a landmark title (it was also Game of the Year on Senses in 2016). Its compelling narrative, combined with ingenious puzzles and simple yet effective game mechanics, creates a truly exceptional experience.

I have encountered numerous games over the years that I hoped would reach similar heights, but none have quite managed to capture that same magic.

Until now.

Darq distinguishes itself with its strikingly dark aesthetic and unsettling atmosphere. The game presents a persistent, nightmarish scenario where players guide a colorless character through a series of intricate puzzles. The environment is fraught with enemies, leaving the player to rely solely on their intellect for survival.

From the moment I started playing Darq, I was immediately drawn in. The music, visual design, and sound effects effectively immerse the player in the protagonist’s nightmare. Similar to Inside, the control scheme is relatively simple. However, keen attention is required, as the gameplay involves manipulating gravity, altering environments, and navigating unconventional perspectives.

The puzzles exhibit a refreshing level of innovation and are generally enjoyable. Players collect items that are essential for solving later challenges. While the initial puzzles are straightforward, the difficulty progressively increases.

A significant strength of Darq lies in its capacity to generate genuine suspense. One puzzle, initially appearing simple, quickly escalates into a tense situation. As the player begins to solve it, the camera dynamically shifts, revealing a lurking monster approaching from behind. Successful completion requires solving the puzzle before the monster attacks, a feat complicated by the constantly shifting camera angles.

Despite its challenges, Darq remains consistently engaging, fostering a desire to play “just one more time.” It is an accessible game that is difficult to stop playing. Furthermore, two substantial DLC expansions are available for Darq, providing additional content.

In conclusion, Darq is a highly recommended title. Its engaging gameplay, suspenseful atmosphere, and addictive qualities make it a standout experience. Available at an attractive price point, it represents excellent value and is a strong contender for one of the most enjoyable games of the year.
