Lars Wingefors, a native of Värmland, represents a significant Swedish success story. Beginning in the gaming industry in the early 1990s with budget game bundles sold in supermarkets (often PC titles priced affordably, such as 3 for 99 SEK) under the Nordic Games banner, he later acquired the THQ brand, creating THQ Nordic. Following this acquisition, the company’s stock experienced substantial growth, resulting in Wingefors becoming a billionaire (at least in terms of share value). A key asset acquired with THQ was its portfolio of intellectual properties, notably the acclaimed Darksiders.
Darksiders emerged as a surprise hit in 2010 for THQ. The game effectively integrated elements inspired by prominent titles: gameplay includes traversal mechanics reminiscent of Zelda – Ocarina of Time, visceral combat and finishing moves echoing God of War, and climbing sequences influenced by Uncharted. These mechanics were woven into a compelling apocalyptic narrative centered on a conflict between Heaven and Hell, with the player assuming the role of War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The result is an engaging experience characterized by straightforward gameplay and a considerable degree of challenge.
While the game’s length may be excessive by a few hours, and the puzzle design becomes somewhat repetitive towards the conclusion, potentially impacting pacing, the overall experience remains highly enjoyable and worthwhile. The “Warmastered” edition incorporates the Wrath of War DLC and provides enhanced Full HD graphics, along with a 60 fps frame rate on PS4 and Xbox One (though not on Wii U). This updated version represents a solid action-adventure title, particularly given its accessible price point under THQ Nordic.
The highly anticipated Darksiders III is forthcoming, and it will feature optimized support for PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
