Review: Cuphead

av senses.se

For a while, Cuphead stood out as a flagship title for Xbox One. This unique game was poised to be a major draw for the platform, similar to how Sony’s Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn bolstered their system. However, Microsoft shifted strategies, and now Cuphead is also available on PC, aligning with their policy of offering all MS games on both Windows and Xbox. While this expands accessibility, it potentially diminishes Cuphead‘s exclusive appeal as a system seller.

Cuphead is recommended in co-op mode as it becomes more fun and easier.

Cuphead is a classic run-and-gun game, reminiscent of 90s titles such as Contra (Super Probotector), Midnight Resistance, and even earlier classics from the 80s like Cobra, Green Beret (Rush’n Attack), and Wonderboy. The gameplay is fast-paced, subjecting players to constant attacks from all directions, while offering minimal damage resistance. Addressing the game’s lengthy development, it’s important to note that Studio MDHR, initially comprised of two brothers, spearheaded the project. Their team has since expanded, allowing them to complete what can be described as a playable, animated film inspired by the 1930s.

The aesthetics and technical execution are remarkably well-crafted. From the simulated film grain to the authentic period soundtrack, the “tinny” audio, and the seamless animation loops, everything is paired with meticulously designed characters realized through hand-drawn and digitized graphics. The narrative centers on Cuphead and Mugman, who, after sneaking into the Devil’s casino, find themselves in a high-stakes gamble. Following a devastating loss, the duo must collect debts for the Devil himself to avoid forfeiting their souls. Players navigate a simple map featuring “bonus tracks” where they collect coins to purchase improved weapons and abilities. Progress involves defeating a series of mini-bosses, culminating in a final confrontation (with the Devil, naturally).

It’s crucial to acknowledge the difficulty of Cuphead, which is evident even in demo trailers. By contemporary standards, the game presents a significant challenge, even for experienced players. While a “simple” mode exists for boss encounters, it prevents players from collecting the debt itself, making it impossible to complete the game entirely in that mode. Consequently, mastering the game requires dedicated practice and repetition. Prepare to die more frequently than in Dark Souls, with your patience and dexterity tested extensively. This high level of difficulty is inherent to the genre.

While the visuals are undeniably impressive and the boss fights offer enjoyable learning experiences, it raises the question of the game’s intrinsic appeal beyond its aesthetics. The core gameplay, while functional, can feel somewhat limited in its design and unforgiving in its difficulty, potentially reminiscent of the arcade era when limited alternatives existed. The risk is that some players may be discouraged and abandon the game prematurely.

The bonus tracks sometimes feel more difficult than the boss fights.

Therefore, a measured recommendation is warranted for Cuphead. At its best, it delivers exhilarating arcade-style action, and its distinctive visuals are consistently captivating. Furthermore, the demanding boss encounters offer a sense of accomplishment upon completion. However, the sometimes-brutal difficulty raises questions about its broad appeal. It’s unlikely to resonate with casual gamers, and even players who excelled at similar games in the 80s may find their reflexes diminished. There’s a possibility that Cuphead will be celebrated primarily as a visual homage to 1930s animation, with its arcade gameplay appealing only to a niche audience. An easier mode for all challenges, including the bonus tracks, would be a welcome addition, allowing a wider audience to experience the game fully, while dedicated players can still strive for the Platinum trophy.
