Review: Colors Live (Switch)

by Henric Brandt

TL;DR

Colors Live brings a unique drawing experience to the Nintendo Switch, featuring the innovative SonarPen that uses sound to translate pressure into color intensity for surprisingly realistic art. It offers fun daily challenges with time limits and a full creative mode for unrestricted painting. While the SonarPen is a game-changer for pressure sensitivity on the Switch, the game's biggest hurdle is the limited screen real estate, which can feel restrictive even with zoom. Despite this, Colors Live is a solid casual creative tool, offering enjoyable value limited only by your imagination. Curious if this digital art tool is right for you? Dive into the full review!

Prior to my work in video production starting in 1992, I experimented with comic book creation. While “creation” might be an exaggeration, as the audience was primarily limited to family, the core issue was my eagerness to rush to the next stage, preventing the final product from fully realizing my vision. Additionally, my drawing skills are modest, yet I find the process calming and enjoyable.

When Colors Live arrived for review, its concept immediately piqued my interest. The game is available both as a physical edition, which includes the SonarPen, and as a standalone digital download. I will elaborate on the advantages and disadvantages of each option shortly.

Upon unboxing, the SonarPen is revealed. It connects to the Nintendo Switch via the headphone jack, utilizing sound-based technology. The pressure applied when drawing modulates the pitch, which is then translated into varying color intensity. This allows for the creation of relatively realistic drawings. While the Switch’s screen features touch input, it lacks pressure sensitivity. The pen has a robust feel in hand, and the underlying technology functions effectively. While it’s possible to use Colors Live without the dedicated pen, relying on finger input or a standard stylus, the resulting artwork will lack transparency due to the screen’s inability to detect pressure variations without the SonarPen.

Colors Live incorporates a challenge mode that presents a daily task. Examples include drawing a dream, a frightening forest, or an exhibit from a museum. These challenges impose a 20-minute time constraint and may limit access to the full spectrum of colors and brushes, resulting in engaging and entertaining creative exercises.

The software also allows for unrestricted painting, free from time constraints. A button on the pen provides quick access to the brush and color selection menus, facilitating an efficient workflow. The ability to zoom in on specific areas allows for detailed work. The screen resolution is sufficient for rendering fine details in drawings.

The primary limitation of Colors Live is the relatively small screen size of the Nintendo Switch. Regardless of the sophistication of the implemented technology, the constrained drawing area can feel restrictive, becoming slightly cumbersome even with the zoom function.

In conclusion, Colors Live offers an enjoyable addition to the Nintendo Switch’s library. As a casual creative outlet, it provides compelling value, limited only by the user’s imagination and the aforementioned screen size.
