Today, Coco – widely regarded as one of the year’s best films – is being released on Blu-ray and DVD by Disney. The quality of animation, combined with Pixar’s exceptional storytelling and music, is truly remarkable. Our original theatrical review from earlier this year remains valid; you can read that review for a more in-depth look at the film itself. Coco serves as both a vibrant celebration of Mexican culture and a poignant reflection on life and family.
The Blu-ray release delivers a high-quality viewing experience. Animated films are particularly well-suited to digital media, and this release presents a visually stunning depiction of Mexico and the Land of the Dead, with excellent color accuracy, lighting, and contrast. The addition of HDR would have further enhanced the visual experience. Even without a 3D television, the image exhibits a notable sense of depth. Pixar’s restrained use of 3D effects is commendable; Coco does not rely on gratuitous “3D effect” scenes or excessive camera movements. The 3D presentation enhances the viewing experience without being distracting.
The audio quality is also impressive. The English track is presented in 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, while the Swedish dub (and other Nordic languages) are available in 5.1 Dolby Digital. While we typically prefer the original language, the Swedish dub is exceptionally well-produced and equally enjoyable. An Atmos track, as available in the theatrical release, would have been a welcome addition, but its absence is not a significant drawback.
The release includes a comprehensive collection of bonus material that will appeal to fans. Over thirty minutes of deleted scenes are a highlight, and we also appreciated the segment featuring Anthony Gonzales (the voice of Miguel in the English version) receiving the news of his casting, as well as the commentary track with directors Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) and Adrian Molina.
Coco remains a standout film of the year and a worthwhile addition to any collection. For those who haven’t experienced it, a heartwarming cinematic journey awaits, ideal for family viewing. If you’ve seen it in theaters, the film retains its appeal on home video, offering an opportunity to appreciate it in a different language, perhaps. The inclusion of the UHD 4K version, available in the US with HDR, 4K resolution, and Dolby Atmos in English, would have been ideal. However, Disney Sweden has not yet adopted localized UHD releases, although we anticipate their arrival soon, as many other Nordic film companies have already embraced the format. When that occurs, we look forward to revisiting Dia de los Muertos in enhanced fidelity!
