Chock åter från Graven is set in the modern world, complete with its familiar trappings: traffic congestion, bills, political landscapes, and everyday challenges. However, a crucial difference lies in the nocturnal disturbances, which manifest not as mundane occurrences, but as the influence of demons, apparitions, and other entities of the occult. The populace is delineated into those aware of these supernatural elements and those who remain oblivious, allowing players to begin the adventure as either informed participants or individuals gradually awakening to the unfolding mysteries. In Chock åter från Graven, the Chockmästaren (Game Master) assumes the role of orchestrator, guiding a group of players through the narrative. The game’s adaptable nature facilitates easy transposition to different historical periods, as many elements are readily transferable. Shifting the setting to a pre-mobile phone era, for instance, could introduce interesting narrative possibilities.

My return to role-playing after a hiatus of over thirty years has been a genuine resurgence, reconnecting me with the anticipation of dice rolls and collaborative storytelling. While I missed the original release, Chock åter från Graven offered a welcome introduction to the compelling world of this classic horror game. The original Chock, launched in the 1980s, achieved considerable international recognition and was translated into numerous languages. However, it subsequently faded from prominence, with no further editions produced.

This updated edition retains core elements of the original while incorporating rule modifications designed to enhance simplicity and modernize gameplay. However, prior role-playing experience is highly recommended, as navigating this world benefits greatly from familiarity with the genre. The rules are comprehensive, requiring careful consideration of multiple parameters to effectively drive the plot. For instance, direct “shoot” skill is absent; instead, successful weapon usage relies on the application of various underlying abilities. While this approach fosters realism, it also increases the workload for the Chockmästaren.

Digital character sheets are available as PDFs, offering an alternative with some user effort.
