Review: Chappie (Cinema)

av Christian Moberg

Neill Blomkamp has directed several noteworthy science fiction films in the 21st century. His debut, District 9, offers insightful social commentary on the treatment of vulnerable refugees, depicted as aliens seeking refuge on Earth. In Elysium, starring Matt Damon, Blomkamp examines class disparity and economic injustice. While perhaps not as impactful as District 9, the film maintains a sharp critique. Importantly, the film’s message complements its entertainment value, enhanced by distinctive visual effects, character direction, and overall style.

In Chappie, Blomkamp explores complex themes surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), specifically questioning its nature and its implications for understanding consciousness and humanity. Deon Wilson (Dev Patel), an engineer at the weapons manufacturer Tetravaal in Johannesburg, is responsible for the city’s robotic police force, which combats rising crime. Concurrently, he is developing an AI prototype. Through a series of events, Chappie, a discarded police robot, becomes the test platform for Deon’s AI program. However, unforeseen circumstances place Chappie in unfavorable hands, leading to escalating complications.

Blomkamp raises pertinent questions about the defining characteristics of humanity and presents a plausible depiction of AI development. Like a newborn, Chappie learns and evolves through experience. Influenced by his environment, Chappie’s experiences shape his development. Consequently, his descent into a life of crime evokes concern, akin to parental anxieties. The film resonates emotionally, particularly as Chappie’s innocence confronts the harsh realities of the world, impacting both the audience and Deon, his creator. Sharlto Copley, a frequent collaborator with Blomkamp, voices Chappie, delivering a compelling performance, even if not quite on par with Andy Serkis’ portrayal of Gollum in Lord of the Rings.

Despite some logical inconsistencies and conspicuous product placement, Chappie delivers a visually striking science fiction experience with impressive effects. Dev Patel provides a competent performance, although perhaps not as remarkable as his work in Slumdog Millionaire. Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver, in supporting roles, offer understated performances, lending their star power and experience to the production. Chappie prompts existential contemplation, inviting viewers to consider its themes. The film offers visually appealing action sequences with a brisk pace and solid acting. It is refreshing to see an engaging robot-centric film, especially considering that Alex Proyas’ I, Robot (2004), while anticipated, ultimately fell short of expectations. Furthermore, the recent announcement of Neill Blomkamp directing a genuine Alien sequel enhances the anticipation, suggesting that Chappie confirms that Blomkamp retains his talent for crafting compelling science fiction narratives.
