Review: Captain Marvel (UHD)

av senses.se

Captain Marvel, the 21st film in the Marvel Extended Universe (MCU), arrives on 4K with Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 audio. As we have previously reviewed the film (and its plot) in its theatrical release, this review will focus specifically on the technical merits of the Captain Marvel UHD release.

Captain Marvel UHD – IMAGE

Captain Marvel was filmed using a range of high-end cameras, including the Panavision Millennium DXL, Arri Alexa 65, and RED Weapon 8K VV Monstro. This suggests the source material could have supported a genuine 8K master. However, the final product utilizes a 2K master, upscaled to 4K. This was presumably done for workflow efficiency, and the results are generally positive. The HDR is mastered in standard HDR10, offering broad compatibility. While effective, HDR10 lacks the dynamic metadata of formats like HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, which can provide an enhanced image.

Overall, the visual presentation is impressive. From expansive establishing shots in space to detailed close-ups during Vers’s time on Earth in the 1990s, the image is consistently sharp with vibrant colors. The UHD 4K version offers a noticeable improvement over the included Blu-ray, which is limited to Full HD and lacks HDR. One minor observation is that high-contrast scenes, particularly those with strong lighting effects, can appear slightly less dynamic compared to films mastered with dynamic HDR formats. However, the overall picture quality is commendable and demonstrates a continued improvement in Disney’s Marvel UHD releases.

Captain Marvel UHD – SOUND

Dolby Atmos is a standard audio format for UHD releases. The Captain Marvel release is notable for its 7.1.4 mix (seven channels, one LFE (subwoofer) channel, and four overhead speakers for object-based sound). A capable AV receiver will decode this information appropriately for your speaker configuration, but the 7.1.4 mix offers enhanced spatial audio for systems with front height and rear surround speakers. The audio track is identified as Dolby TrueHD, as the Atmos data is embedded within this lossless codec. (For a detailed explanation of home theater audio codecs, Kjell & Co provides a useful overview.) The master volume appears slightly low, requiring a modest increase to achieve optimal impact. Once adjusted, the soundtrack delivers a generous, wide, and detailed soundscape. Action sequences are particularly engaging, with dynamic effects and impactful bass. The bass response is effectively utilized throughout the film, from the retro soundtrack to the sounds of spaceships.

Captain Marvel UHD – EXTRAS

The bonus content included on the Captain Marvel UHD disc mirrors that of the Blu-ray release. Generally, studios do not invest in dedicated 4K production for supplemental materials. The extras consist of several short, somewhat fragmented documentaries. One highlight focuses on Nick Fury and his journey to becoming the Avengers’ director. Additional features include commentary tracks (Blu-ray only), a gag reel, and deleted scenes. While the quantity of extras is adequate, more in-depth features, such as a dedicated exploration of Stan Lee’s contributions to Captain Marvel, would have been a welcome addition.

Summary

Captain Marvel on Ultra HD Blu-ray represents a strong release. Following previous image transfer issues with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the less impressive Captain America: Civil War, this film succeeds on most fronts. The visual quality is high, although it could have been further enhanced by the inclusion of Dolby Vision or HDR10+. The audio is well-executed, and the supplemental materials are satisfactory. Overall, Captain Marvel earns its place within a collection of MCU films in 4K.
