The Burnout series was a significant trendsetter during the sixth generation of consoles (PlayStation 2 and Xbox). As titles like Gran Turismo prioritized realism and authentic driving simulation, Burnout accelerated in the opposite direction, embracing arcade-style racing where aggressive maneuvers were encouraged and rewarded. Burnout Paradise, the seventh and most recent installment, launched in 2008. It distinguished itself as the first in the series to feature an open-world environment and online multiplayer functionality.
Now, Burnout Paradise returns in a remastered version for current-generation consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) and PC. While its age is apparent, the game benefits from a resolution boost (up to 4K on Xbox One X) and a remarkably stable frame rate. Furthermore, the refined steering provides a smooth and responsive experience. Accompanied by Guns N’ Roses’ “Paradise City,” and coinciding with the release of Spielberg’s Ready Player One, Burnout Paradise retains a retro appeal, enhanced with moderate improvements, and remains faithful to the original experience, justifying its reasonable price.
We eagerly anticipate a remastered version of Burnout 3: Takedown, a favorite among our editorial staff and many players. What do you say, EA and Criterion?
