Review: Bumblebee (UHD)

av Henric Brandt

As mentioned in my previous review of Bumblebee in theaters, I am an avid Transformers enthusiast. Consequently, the 4K and Dolby Atmos release of Bumblebee has seen significant playtime since it arrived; I’ve already viewed the film three times.

I find Dolby Atmos to be a truly compelling soundscape, and Bumblebee demonstrates its capabilities effectively. The film features a wide dynamic range, from quiet dialogues to large-scale combat sequences involving numerous characters. Improper audio balancing can often lead to insufficient volume during dialogue, necessitating an increase that then results in excessively loud action scenes. Fortunately, Bumblebee avoids this issue; the audio levels are consistently well-managed, negating the need for manual adjustments. However, I did perceive occasional, minor audio unsynchronization. This anomaly is particularly noteworthy as it has not been observed in other UHD titles on this system.

The 4K presentation of Bumblebee surpasses the theatrical experience on the editorial team’s Panasonic TX-65EZ95OE display. While I appreciate the cinematic experience, the clarity afforded by a 65-inch 4K HDR television elevates the visual fidelity. The enhanced detail in Bumblebee is striking, revealing subtle imperfections on the protagonist’s surface and intricate foliage in the forest environments.

The included supplemental material is substantial, featuring documentaries that are genuinely engaging and avoid excessive promotional content, as well as a selection of deleted scenes. Notably, there’s a section showcasing re-edited scenes with improvisational performances by John Cena. While these clips offer some amusement, they primarily highlight the actor’s on-set energy, rather than contributing significantly to the overall viewing experience, bordering on the somewhat absurd.

In conclusion, this UHD edition nearly achieves a perfect score. The isolated instances of audio synchronization issues prevent it from reaching its full potential. Given that this phenomenon has not been replicated with other titles on the same equipment, it suggests a potential anomaly in the transfer itself. Nevertheless, the otherwise exceptional quality of this release makes it a must-have for demonstrating the capabilities of a high-end home theater setup!
