Review: Battlefield 6

by Henric Brandt

TL;DR

Battlefield 6 (the 14th in the series!) is a visually stunning, next-gen shooter that offers a more realistic and impactful combat experience than ever before. It boasts impressive graphics, near-perfect performance on PS5 and PS5 Pro, and deeply satisfying destructible environments. While the campaign is concise, the multiplayer, featuring cross-play and classic modes like Conquest, truly shines. The sound design is world-class, adding immense immersion. Minor gripes include a short campaign and a learning curve for new multiplayer players, but overall, it's a near-perfect, highly recommended title. Dive into the full review to see why it's a must-play!

This review is written in collaboration with Christoffer Alberti , who contributes his insights further down in the review.

Battlefield 6 is not the sixth game in the series; it is, in fact, the fourteenth. The franchise originated 23 years ago when Swedish DICE released Battlefield 1942. Since then, numerous games and expansions have been launched.

A Dark Future, Yet a Strong, Albeit Concise, Campaign

Battlefield 6 is set in 2028, portraying a world engulfed in conflict—a scenario that, regrettably, feels all too plausible given the current global climate (2025). The single-player campaign centers on a group of elite soldiers navigating political intrigue, sabotage, and large-scale engagements across urban and desert landscapes. The choices made during the intensity of battle directly influence the campaign’s progression and outcome. Without revealing spoilers, it’s safe to say that once the action commences, moments of tranquility are scarce.

Battlefield vs. Call of Duty

The rivalry between Call of Duty and Battlefield is perennial, with Call of Duty often prevailing. However, this time, the competition is far closer – Battlefield 6 approaches perfection. I will endeavor to cover its aspects concisely.

Graphics and Performance – True Next-Gen Immersion

Visually, the game finally demonstrates the full potential of next-generation consoles. The level of detail is immense, and the environmental destructibility—allowing players to shoot and demolish cars and buildings—significantly enhances the immersive realism.

As is customary, there are two primary graphics settings: Performance and Balanced.

  • On PlayStation 5:
    • Balanced: 1440p @ 60 FPS
    • Performance: 1280p @ up to 90 FPS
  • On PlayStation 5 Pro:
    • Balanced: Native 4K @ 60 FPS
    • Performance: 1620p @ up to 120 FPS

During testing on the PlayStation 5 Pro, even with 64 players on the same map in online mode, I observed a minimum of 101 FPS. This level of optimization is exceptionally impressive.

Typically, I opt for Performance Mode in this genre of game 99.9 percent of the time. For me, prioritizing smooth gameplay is more crucial than hyper-realistic environmental reflections.

Controls and Customization

The controls are robust and intuitive, though mastering the breadth of available actions still presents a challenge. Controller sensitivity can be meticulously adjusted, offering extensive customization options for experienced FPS players. Additionally, a comprehensive array of controls is provided for operating aircraft, ground vehicles, and helicopters.

Multiplayer – Advantages and Challenges

As expected, the multiplayer component constitutes a significant portion of the experience in this title. The inclusion of cross-play, enabling competition across different consoles and PC, is a welcome feature. However, a potential pitfall is frequently encountering opponents who are significantly more experienced or higher-ranked, necessitating a period of adaptation for new players.

Furthermore, PC players generally exhibit superior speed and accuracy compared to console players, which intensifies the difficulty. A recommendation is to disable cross-play for this reason, though this will result in fewer available servers and, consequently, longer waiting times. Currently, cross-play matchmaking typically takes five to six seconds, whereas playing exclusively against other console players can extend waiting times to approximately 30-40 seconds.

World-Class Soundscape

Before transitioning to Christoffer‘s insights, it is imperative to highlight the game’s exceptional soundscape. The audio design is among the finest I have ever encountered. Explosions and gunshots are rendered with astonishing realism, and their environmental reverberation and gradual decay are masterfully executed.

I strongly recommend playing with high-quality headphones or a surround sound system, not only to fully appreciate the game’s immersive qualities but also to gain a tactical advantage by discerning approaching enemies. Utilizing a Sharp Soundbar with rear speakers, the immersion was profound, replicating the intensity of being on the battlefield. While I lack experience in actual combat, my background in group sharpshooting confirms the soundscape’s absolute mastery.

Christoffer Alberti’s Thoughts on Battlefield 6

Battlefield is back! It is no secret that anticipation has been high for one of the year’s most hyped games. However, expectations should be reset; Battlefield 6 delivers its signature intense explosions and action, now grounded in a more reality-driven tone.

Unlike previous installments in the series—or its competitor Call of Duty, which releases Black Ops 7 this year and often requires emptying an entire magazine—enemies in Battlefield 6 are frequently eliminated with just one or two shots.

As before, this is a first-person shooter, but the developers have truly elevated every aspect. Evidently, substantial effort has been invested in crafting a profound sense of realism. The graphics and effects are so impressive that they can momentarily blur the line between game and reality.

Smooth Gameplay Experience and Iconic Modes

Regarding the gameplay experience, performance is exceptionally fluid. During testing on PlayStation 5, the absence of bugs or lag significantly enhanced the overall impression. The game delivers a polished, responsive, and meticulously designed experience—precisely what is expected from a contemporary Battlefield title.

The multiplayer mode offers an extensive selection of game modes, allowing players to explore and discover their preferred styles. One of the most iconic is the classic Conquest mode, where the objective is to capture and hold various areas and flags. Victory is awarded to the team that controls the most points for the longest duration.

However, achieving this is challenging. With 64 players intensely focused on the same objective, each area devolves into an intense and chaotic battlefield. Success hinges on rapid decision-making, strategic teamwork, and superior marksmanship.

Rewards and Progression

As with previous iterations, players are generously rewarded after each match. Accumulating XP unlocks extensive opportunities to upgrade weapons, vehicles, and equipment. This progression system enriches each subsequent battle and provides a notable advantage in future engagements.

Conclusion: An Exemplary Score

In summary, Christoffer and I concur: Battlefield 6 delivers a gaming experience that approaches perfection. It earns our unequivocal recommendation as a must-play title.

The sole aspects preventing a perfect score are the campaign’s relatively short duration and the absence of an option to utilize a sidearm while the avatar is wounded and awaiting medical attention, a feature present in titles like Borderlands 4.

Nevertheless, the considerable price tag of 900 SEK is quickly justified by the extensive hours of premium entertainment it provides.
