Review: Basic Instinct

av Henric Brandt

A former rock star is brutally murdered, and suspicion immediately falls on Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone). As the investigation unfolds, it’s revealed that Tramell, an author, has penned a narrative strikingly similar to the actual crime. Police officer Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) is assigned to the case, soon realizing he may be in grave danger, mirroring the plot of Tramell’s current book, which features a police officer meeting a violent end after becoming entangled with the wrong woman.

Dutch director Paul Verhoeven achieved considerable success with RoboCop, released in 1987. Following this, he directed Total Recall in 1990, solidifying his reputation. Consequently, it was somewhat unexpected when he transitioned from science fiction to directing an erotic thriller. The term “erotic thriller” is less frequently used today, perhaps because readily accessible online pornography has diminished the demand for such films (with the exception of book adaptations like 50 Shades of Grey).

Unfortunately, Basic Instinct is somewhat overwhelmed by its numerous, extended, and graphic sex scenes. It’s notable how detailed the film is in its depiction of sexual acts, particularly in this uncut version, although the changes from the standard release are relatively minor, consisting primarily of alternate angles and a few additional frames of violence.

Verhoeven’s intention may have been to challenge existing taboos surrounding sex in mainstream cinema, a concept perhaps still relevant today, although contemporary sex scenes are far more explicit and would likely have received an “X” rating decades ago. The film garnered both praise and criticism, undeniably succeeding in generating controversy and headlines. This coincided with Madonna’s similar efforts to provoke through sexuality. However, even decades later, the explicitness of certain scenes between Douglas and Stone remains striking.

Fundamentally, Basic Instinct is a detective story, and it excels as a “who-done-it.” The narrative incorporates numerous red herrings and features effective practical effects that retain their visceral impact. Michael Douglas delivers a performance consistent with his established style. However, the character of Curran, the flawed police officer, is particularly compelling. Prior to Basic Instinct, Sharon Stone had a minor role in Total Recall and played a police officer in Police Academy 4. This film marked her breakthrough, and she delivers a star-making performance. The character of Tramell is enigmatic, fluctuating between warmth and calculated coldness. The infamous interrogation scene exemplifies her ability to maintain control of the room, and not solely due to the iconic leg-crossing.

Having not seen the film for several years, one particular exchange stood out as indicative of a different era. When the police ask Tramell if she was the murdered man’s girlfriend, she replies, “No, I’m just screwing him.” The police officer then retorts, “Are you a whore?” This exchange feels notably dated and out of place today.

Another element that reveals the film’s age is a factual inaccuracy: DNA analysis was a recognized technique in 1992, which would have significantly expedited the process of identifying the murderer.

Studio S Entertainment continues to demonstrate its commitment to high-quality Blu-ray releases. Basic Instinct includes two hours of supplementary material, featuring both archival content and newly produced documentaries from 2020. The image quality is excellent, representing the best possible presentation for a 30-year-old film. The DTS 5.1 audio track is satisfactory, with the car chase sequence providing the most immersive experience.

In conclusion, despite its inherent silliness and acknowledged flaws, I recommend Basic Instinct as a modern classic. This excellent Blu-ray release is a worthwhile investment.
