Review: Backworlds

av Henric Brandt

Platformers, built on fundamentally similar mechanics, are ubiquitous. The core gameplay typically involves traversing from left to right, navigating platforms and obstacles, and engaging with enemies. This concept can be executed with high production values, as seen in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, or with a minimalist approach in classic retro games. While the fundamental concept has remained largely unchanged, Backworlds introduces a novel approach.

Backworlds’ core mechanic centers on manipulating the environment by “painting” between two dimensions. Objects solid in one dimension become traversable in the other, and vice versa. This dimension-shifting mechanic, while explored in titles like Crash Bandicoot 4 and The Medium, is implemented uniquely here. The controls are intuitive and allow for precise navigation through the game’s intricate challenges. While Backworlds emphasizes creative problem-solving rather than rote memorization, players should anticipate a degree of trial and error as they progress.

Originally released for PC in 2019, Backworlds is now available on the Nintendo Switch. The Switch platform proves to be an ideal fit, as the handheld mode allows players to utilize the touch screen for precise environmental manipulation. Backworlds performs well in both docked and handheld modes, with no noticeable degradation in visual clarity or playability.

Backworlds offers a non-linear gameplay experience, affording players considerable freedom in how they approach the challenges. The soundtrack complements the gameplay, enhancing the immersive experience and encouraging extended engagement. Furthermore, the game is available at an accessible price point.

In conclusion, Backworlds is a noteworthy title that distinguishes itself within the platformer genre. Its innovative mechanics and creative design offer a refreshing experience. However, it is worth noting that some puzzles present a significant challenge, and the optimal path forward may not always be immediately apparent.
