Review: Audio-Technica ATH-AP2000Ti – Wired Luxury

av senses.se

While wireless headphones and music sources (such as modern, high-end smartphones) are increasingly offering high-resolution codec support, the reliability and proven performance of a traditional analog connection remain compelling. The Audio-Technica ATH-AP2000Ti headphones represent a luxury offering in the high-end segment, delivering a premium experience reflected in their price point.

Under the hood

Encased within the titanium earcups is a 53 mm driver, marginally wider than comparable headphones. This increased width aims to enhance bass response. Featuring permendur magnetic circuits and a Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) coating, the design prioritizes premium components for optimal audio fidelity. The earcup size and construction are engineered to optimize airflow and internal resonance, contributing to enhanced sound quality compared to conventional closed-back headphones.

The headphones have a specified frequency response of 5-50,000 Hz (more on frequency response beyond the audible range here) and an impedance of 44 Ohms. This suggests that these headphones perform best when paired with a dedicated amplifier capable of providing sufficient power, rather than relying solely on a smartphone’s 3.5mm output. While functional with mobile devices, an amplifier can unlock their full potential in terms of volume and overall sonic performance.

Design and first impressions

The AP2000Ti’s aesthetic presents a somewhat contrasting impression. The mirror-polished earcups exude a luxurious appearance, but are also prone to fingerprints and smudges, requiring frequent cleaning to maintain their pristine finish (a cleaning cloth is included for this purpose).

These headphones are notably lightweight and comfortable to wear. The leather-clad headband conforms well to the head. However, the ear cushions, while comfortable, may fit somewhat snugly, potentially leading to warmth during extended listening sessions.

As mentioned, the AP2000Ti utilizes a wired connection exclusively. Uniquely, the user determines the left and right earcup orientation, as the cups are identical, by selecting which cup to plug the cable into. The included cable utilizes Audio-Technica’s proprietary A2DC connector, so care should be taken not to misplace it. The package includes two A2DC cables terminated with 3.5mm connectors (one longer, one shorter), as well as a five-pole, balanced 4.4mm cable for use with high-end audio devices that support this connection. A 6.35mm (1/4″) adapter is also provided for connecting to full-size amplifiers.

Despite being closed-back headphones, the AP2000Ti exhibit a degree of sound leakage. While unlikely to disturb those nearby, a colleague in the same room could discern the music being played at moderate listening volumes. This may be attributable to the relatively thin titanium earcup construction, which likely avoids excessive mass that could otherwise dampen the sound.

Sound quality ATH-AP2000Ti

The key question: How does the ATH-AP2000Ti sound? Our evaluation at Senses utilizes a reference playlist on Tidal (configured for lossless, Hi-Fi reproduction) and Spotify at its highest quality setting. The latter option facilitates more direct connections (Spotify Connect is currently more developed and compatible than Tidal Connect). While the optimal streaming service can be debated, subtle differences may be discernible depending on the variables and steps in the audio chain.

Testing the bass response with reference tracks reveals generally good performance. However, the headphones may not fully reproduce the lowest frequencies with sufficient impact, particularly with fast-paced music. Tracks with slower, sustained bass (e.g., Creeps Vertigo) demonstrate the headphones’ capacity to generate a warm, resonant bass foundation. However, when confronted with faster tempos, such as metal (e.g., any song by Slayer) or hip-hop, the pronounced bass that some listeners prefer may be lacking. LudacrisRed Light District sounds airy and engaging, but the bass impact is somewhat subdued. The sound reproduction can be described as controlled and relatively neutral (characteristic of Audio-Technica), but some genres may benefit from a more pronounced low-end. The AP2000Ti may not be ideally suited for listeners prioritizing strong bass in these genres.

With midrange-focused genres, such as soft rock/pop (e.g., Dire Straits Sultans of Swing), the AP2000Ti excels. The sound is detailed, engaging, and well-balanced, with clear separation between vocals and instruments while maintaining cohesion. Similarly, with singer-songwriter tracks such as Katie Melua‘s If I were a sailboat or her rendition of Wonderful Life, the AP2000Ti truly shines, offering a captivating listening experience.

The AP2000Ti also handles higher frequencies with competence. Mozart‘s Queen of the Night (from The Magic Flute) showcases the headphones’ ability to reproduce complex operatic pieces with clarity. The soprano’s timbre is rendered with precision, while the orchestral foundation remains distinct. Similarly, the overtones in Ane Brun‘s live performance of Big in Japan highlight the AP2000Ti’s strengths, allowing guitar strings to resonate freely without sounding harsh, and maintaining the power of Brun’s vocals through its accurate bass tone reproduction.

Summary ATH-AP2000Ti

The Audio-Technica ATH-AP2000Ti commands a significant price, commensurate with its exceptional quality. For audiophiles who appreciate immersive live performances, singer-songwriter music, and softer rock or pop genres, these headphones offer a captivating and nuanced listening experience. However, for enthusiasts of fast metal/hard rock and hip-hop, or for casual listeners, this model may not be the most suitable choice, particularly given its price range. Consider the Audio-Technica M50xBT as an alternative, which delivers excellent performance for its price point (and offers wireless connectivity), although its bass response is also not heavily emphasized.

Ultimately, the ideal audio equipment depends on individual preferences and priorities. The AP2000Ti resembles a well-tailored suit or a comfortable Volvo XC90 – a product characterized by high quality and refined performance, catering to users who value accurate sound reproduction and do not necessarily prioritize the most aggressive sound signature or trendsetting aesthetics.

A new reference in the wired high-end headphone segment.
