Review: The Matrix – Resurrections (UHD)

av Henric Brandt

We previously reviewed The Matrix: Resurrections during its theatrical release. This review will primarily focus on the Ultra HD 4K edition.

Upon exiting the theater after the initial viewing, the film presented a complex array of ideas to consider. Now, experiencing The Matrix: Resurrections in a home theater environment offered a significantly different perspective. While the film’s runtime remains a point of consideration, elements that initially detracted from the experience were less pronounced upon a second viewing.

The visual presentation is exceptionally strong, and the Ultra HD edition truly showcases the intricate details of the cinematography. The contrast between dark and light elements is particularly striking. Explosions within the film effectively utilize HDR and the native 4K master, revealing granular detail across the image. The Dolby Atmos sound design ranks among the best encountered on an Ultra HD release. Dialogue is clearly rendered and balanced against dynamic action sequences, providing an immersive experience for surround sound systems. The film features outstanding sound design, with the motorcycle scene towards the end benefiting significantly from the enhanced audio fidelity.

Recent home theater releases have exhibited a positive trend regarding supplemental content, addressing previous concerns about lackluster extras. The Matrix: Resurrections continues this trend. The disc includes comprehensive and informative documentaries that detail the film’s production process. These features prioritize substance over promotional material, minimizing superficial praise. A highlight is the behind-the-scenes look at a particular sequence near the film’s conclusion. Initially assumed to be computer-generated, the effect is revealed to be primarily practical. The film’s visual effects are impressive, and the supplemental material further underscores their quality, demonstrating a reliance on practical techniques rather than solely relying on CGI. While The Matrix: Resurrections is available on HBO Max, the streaming version is demonstrably inferior to the physical release. The image quality is noticeably softer, and the audio lacks the impact of the Ultra HD Blu-ray. Furthermore, the HBO Max version omits all supplemental features.

The Matrix: Resurrections represents a strong addition to the series, and proved even more engaging upon a second viewing. Consequently, the merits of the film, combined with the quality of this edition, warrant a strong recommendation.
