Platformers are a favored genre, known for their versatile core mechanics. Sockventure initially appears to be a standard entry, but its unique style quickly becomes apparent upon playing. The controls are intuitive and responsive, and new abilities are introduced progressively, allowing players to master preceding elements before advancing. The levels increase in difficulty, requiring players to maintain focus and strategic thinking to progress.

As mentioned, the controls are simple, placing emphasis on player skill. Sockventure offers a fast-paced and engaging experience, fostering a compelling “just one more try” mentality. It is genuinely difficult to stop playing. Death is frequent, but the instant respawn time minimizes frustration. Checkpoints are strategically placed to mitigate extensive backtracking after failure. For players seeking a more forgiving experience, the option to acquire additional checkpoints is available. This “Extra Checkpoints” function is a notable feature. However, the challenge of replaying longer sections due to late-stage failures can still be present.

Sockventure is well-suited for the Nintendo Switch. The visuals are clear and the gameplay is enjoyable on the built-in screen. The primary issue encountered was in Hand-held-mode, where the controls can become somewhat cumbersome. Some challenges require simultaneously holding the left trigger button and using the left thumbstick for movement. While manageable with an external controller, the placement of the trigger on the side of the screen in handheld mode can feel awkward and impede execution. Switching to Table-top-mode and detaching the Joy-con:s offered an improved control scheme.

In conclusion, Sockventure warrants a recommendation. Its engaging gameplay and challenging levels make it difficult to put down.
