Review: Wavetale

av Henric Brandt

Wavetale presents a world dramatically altered by rising sea levels, where civilization is largely submerged. Players take on the role of Sigrid, who discovers a unique method of traversing the waves. Armed with her net and newfound abilities, she confronts the encroaching darkness threatening her world’s remnants. The gameplay involves surfing across the water, utilizing structures for traversal, combating monsters, and eliminating the black sludge consuming the environment. Sigrid receives assistance from her Grandma and other survivors in her quest to uncover secrets and liberate the world from the looming threat.

Wavetale features a compelling narrative that unfolds effectively, quickly immersing the player in Sigrid’s world and the circumstances granting her wave-surfing abilities, a crucial element in this waterlogged setting. The wave-surfing animations are well-executed, exhibiting a natural flow. Navigating the waves correctly is essential to avoid the encroaching sludge. However, despite the game’s stylized visuals, the angularity of certain characters and environments can be distracting at times.

I experienced Wavetale on the Playstation 5, eliminating hardware-related performance issues. The game’s design choices, however, occasionally result in a low-resolution visual experience. Furthermore, the narrative theme of saving the world from a corrupting sludge feels somewhat familiar, echoing similar plots in other titles such as The Gunk, where, in my opinion, it was implemented more effectively.

Wavetale generally offers a low-stakes gameplay experience. While creatures and sludge can defeat Sigrid, combat is relatively straightforward, and death results in minimal progress loss, typically respawning the player nearby. The absence of fall damage diminishes the consequences of exploration, making accidental falls a minor inconvenience rather than a setback. This lack of significant challenge contributes to a sense of blandness and eventual repetitiveness.

In conclusion, Wavetale provides a pleasant, albeit somewhat shallow, gaming experience. A greater degree of challenge would have significantly enhanced its long-term appeal.
