Review: UFO Sweden

av Henric Brandt

In UFO Sweden, we are introduced to Denise (Inez Dahl Torhaug), whose father disappeared eight years prior under mysterious circumstances. When a car crashes into a barn, she suspects it may be her father’s old vehicle. She then contacts UFO Sweden, the association where her father was active, seeking their assistance in investigating the incident. Initially skeptical, the members of UFO Sweden gradually begin to consider the possibility that Denise’s suspicions are valid. Together, they embark on a perilous adventure that transcends the boundaries of time and space.

Crazy Pictures, a film collective originating from Norrköping, began their journey by creating short films on YouTube. In 2018, they released their first feature film, Den Blomstertid nu kommer, which excels in many aspects but ultimately suffers from shortcomings in its script and direction. From a visual standpoint, Den Blomstertid nu kommer is exceptionally well-crafted, standing among the best Swedish productions to date. However, the film’s final act weakens its overall impact. Given that UFO Sweden had double the budget of their debut film, expectations were understandably high.

The visual elements are a strong point of UFO Sweden. The cinematography is stylish, the production design is meticulously executed, and the visual effects are of exceptional quality. However, similar to Den Blomstertid nu kommer, the script presents some weaknesses. Character motivations occasionally appear arbitrary, serving primarily to advance the plot. Sara Shirpey’s character, a police officer ostensibly acting as a friend to Denise, vacillates between antagonism and camaraderie, which feels inconsistent.

The members of UFO Sweden exhibit an unwarranted degree of skepticism toward Denise, citing her father’s perceived “craziness.” However, as an organization dedicated to investigating unexplained phenomena, they should arguably be more receptive to her claims. Furthermore, while the film is set in the 90s, certain technical details occasionally feel anachronistic and out of place within the intended period setting.

Beyond the visuals, and the impressive car chase sequence through Norrköping, the dynamic between Denise and Lennart (portrayed by Jesper Barkselius) is particularly compelling. Their interactions convey a clear sense of mutual respect and warmth.

The Blu-ray edition presents a sharp and stable image in 1080p with a high bitrate. Colors are consistent, and black levels are deep and refined. The cinematography is well-showcased, with the car chase sequence being a particular highlight. The audio is presented in DTSHD 5.1, which, while not the most advanced format, proves perfectly adequate and delivers impact where necessary. The sound design is especially effective during the film’s climax, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

In contrast to many contemporary releases, Crazy Pictures has invested in providing substantial extra material. This includes a well-produced and engaging documentary, as well as other supplementary content. The inclusion of a commentary track is also a significant bonus.

In conclusion, UFO Sweden offers a unique cinematic experience. The film’s strengths are captivating and create moments of genuine enjoyment. However, the narrative becomes somewhat repetitive, and the third act feels rushed and disjointed, detracting from the overall impact. Despite these shortcomings, UFO Sweden is still a worthwhile recommendation, as its highlights represent some of the most compelling filmmaking currently coming out of Sweden.
