Review: Dungeons and Dragons – Honor Among Thieves

av Henric Brandt

In Dungeons and Dragons – Honor Among Thieves, we are introduced to Edgin (Chris Pratt), a thief and bard. During a heist, he and several members of his crew are betrayed and imprisoned. Following a daring escape, Edgin and his companion, Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), a barbarian, find themselves on a mission to rescue Edgin’s daughter, Kira (Chloe Coleman), who is under the care of Forge (Hugh Grant), one of the few gang members who evaded capture. The situation quickly escalates as the identity of the original betrayer is revealed, forcing them to flee once more. Edgin and Holga must assemble a new team of adventurers to rectify the situation and seek justice, a task fraught with challenges.

It has been over three decades since I first played Drakar och Demoner (while Dungeons and Dragons isn’t a direct translation, they share similar themes and characters). I vividly recall the emotional impact, clutching my character sheet with trembling hands. The death of my first role-playing character resonated deeply. His achievements and battles felt significant, and his loss was impactful. Drakar och Demoner played a formative role in my early life. Consequently, the release of a Dungeons and Dragons movie in 2000 generated considerable excitement, which unfortunately turned to disappointment upon viewing. Despite my hopes, the film fell short. Therefore, when I sat down to watch Dungeons and Dragons – Honor Among Thieves 23 years later, my enthusiasm was tempered with caution.

Dungeons and Dragons – Honor Among Thieves delivers the experience I’ve long anticipated. It is a thoroughly enjoyable adventure, executed with exceptional attention to detail. The environments, characters, and creatures are all faithfully and meticulously represented from the role-playing game. The film balances humor and heart, exhibiting a narrative joy that has been lacking in many contemporary films. Furthermore, the directing team’s emphasis on practical effects is a significant advantage. Personally, I find excessive CGI usage tiresome.

The film features several genuinely funny sequences, one of which involves our protagonists attempting to interrogate fallen soldiers in a graveyard. While it may sound unconventional, the scene is remarkably entertaining. The casting is consistently excellent, with seasoned actors such as Chris Pratt, Michelle Rodriguez, and Hugh Grant leading a talented ensemble. The newer additions to the cast – Sophia Lillis, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, and Daisy Head – are perfectly suited to their respective roles.

Dungeons and Dragons – Honor Among Thieves is a fast-paced film that maintains a consistent rhythm. While the film could have benefited from a reduction of approximately ten minutes, this is a minor point overall.

The UHD edition of Dungeons and Dragons – Honor Among Thieves offers stunning visuals in 2160p with HDR. The level of detail is remarkable, and the master is exceptionally sharp. The color reproduction is accurate, and the contrast between blacks and whites is well-defined, without any noticeable bleeding. One particularly impressive sequence occurs during a fight scene in a dungeon, where the interplay of light and darkness is showcased effectively. Furthermore, I observed no lag during fast-paced panning shots.

The Dolby Atmos sound design is equally impressive, demonstrating a well-balanced and impactful mix. One of the film’s standout audio experiences occurs during a sequence where Doric flees from a castle and undergoes multiple transformations. This scene effectively utilizes the surround sound system.

Beyond the high-quality audio and visual presentation, the disc also includes a substantial collection of supplementary materials, which is a welcome addition. There appears to be a resurgence in the inclusion of behind-the-scenes documentaries, as many recent editions I have reviewed have featured such content. While the included documentaries are relatively brief, they are informative and plentiful. The disc also features a blooper reel, as well as deleted and extended scenes.

In conclusion, Dungeons and Dragons – Honor Among Thieves warrants a rating of “Must-See,” as it delivers a truly exceptional cinematic experience. The superior quality of the UHD edition is an added bonus. Appreciation of this film is not contingent on being a fan of Drakar och Demoner; it is equally enjoyable for anyone with an affinity for adventure and fantasy.
