Review: Jabra Elite 10

av senses.se

In our review of the Jabra Elite 8 Active, a pair of headphones we appreciated, we noted the existence of a slightly more refined counterpart. We were, of course, referring to the Jabra Elite 10. Similar to the Jabra Elite 8 Active, these earbuds are not designed to be a highly specialized headset like the Jabra Elite 65e. Instead, they are positioned to compete with headphones in the 3,000 SEK price range, thereby setting a high standard. We will evaluate how the Jabra Elite 10 performs against the leading contenders in this category.

Overall Jabra Elite 10

The case shares an external design with the Jabra Elite 8 Active, featuring wireless charging, a USB-C connector on the bottom, and strong magnets that securely hold the earbuds. The 10 mm drivers deliver a rich and cohesive sound profile, which we will elaborate on further below. A consistent color scheme across the case, cable, and earbuds is a welcome detail. Each earbud weighs 5.7 grams and provides a high degree of comfort. Jabra’s ergonomic design effectively distributes the weight across multiple support points within the ear. A minor drawback is the potential for an earbud to dislodge during exaggerated facial expressions. This occurred infrequently, adding to the surprise when it happened.

The battery life, at six hours with noise reduction enabled, is not exceptional. However, the case and earbuds benefit from remarkably quick charging, mitigating any significant battery life concerns. As with the Jabra Elite 8 Active, the earbuds exhibit impressive standby time, with the Jabra Elite 10 capable of lasting a full 345 days when not in use.

The controls offer flexibility and are implemented using physical buttons, a design choice we favor. The button presses provide clear tactile feedback, allowing for precise control without accidental commands.

The soundstage is special

Jabra has opted not to include advanced codecs such as LDAC or aptX Adaptive, instead utilizing AAC and SBC. However, the Jabra Elite 10 demonstrates that specifications are only one aspect of overall performance. The resulting sound image is rich and remarkably well-balanced. By “well-glued,” we mean that all frequency ranges, peaks, and volume variations within a song are harmoniously integrated. This cohesive sound is a defining characteristic of the Jabra Elite 10.

However, there are areas for improvement. At higher volumes, the midrange and bass frequencies appear to struggle, while the treble becomes somewhat isolated and piercing. Maintaining a moderate volume level allows these earbuds to excel across various genres, delivering a consistently enjoyable experience with both power and warmth. Furthermore, the overall volume output is relatively low compared to other earbuds, potentially requiring users to increase the signal level significantly.

This is the case even after accounting for the somewhat idiosyncratic volume behavior of Jabra’s earbuds. Decreasing the volume on the earbuds and subsequently increasing it on the connected device may not always result in a volume increase until the volume is adjusted directly on the earbuds themselves, similar to an external speaker with its own dedicated volume control.

In summary, the Jabra Elite 10 provides an outstandingly good sound image with the noted exception of performance at high volumes. While not exceptionally acoustic or dynamic, the sound is incredibly well-balanced and warm.

Noise cancellation on the Jabra Elite 10

As always, performance is influenced by the fit and seal within the ear canal. However, accounting for this variable, the noise cancellation is top-tier, creating a noticeably quiet environment. Compared to headphones such as Denon Pro PerL 665 or Anker Soundcore Liberty 4, the Jabra Elite 10 performs either above or on par. We found the noise cancellation to be impressive.

HearThrough

HearThrough performance is adequate, but Sony appears to remain the leader in this technology, particularly with their Sony WF-1000XM4. We continue to await a pair of headphones that can match the now-established benchmark set by Sony.

The Jabra Sound+ app

The Jabra Sound+ app offers extensive customization options. Single, double, and triple-press actions can be configured for a wide range of functions. Even a long press option is available, though it is pre-assigned to volume control. The HearThrough feature can be adjusted, but the noise reduction settings are fixed. However, we did not find it necessary to adjust the noise reduction.

Jabra’s Soundscapes, which provide ambient sound masking (fans, rain, noise, etc.), are also noteworthy, offering a useful tool for enhanced isolation and concentration. While the Soundscapes have been available for some time, the looping repetition can be noticeable, creating an audible click. Despite this limitation, their inclusion is a positive feature.

Conclusion Jabra Elite 10

Determining the ideal customer for these headphones is not straightforward. The appeal of the Jabra Elite 10 lies in their “no nonsense” design and overall quality. Similar to the Jabra Elite 8 Active, they deliver an excellent sound image without requiring complex hearing tests or personalized profiles. However, unlike the Jabra Elite 8 Active, the Jabra Elite 10 lacks a specific, targeted feature. They function primarily as a pair of headphones designed for enjoying music, which raises concerns about their price point. At 3,000 SEK, the Jabra Elite 10 faces stiff competition from models offering greater capabilities and superior acoustics. While space and width are adequately handled, when compared to headphones such as the Technics EAH-AZ80 or Sony WF-1000XM4, the Jabra Elite 10 falls short, impacting its overall rating.

However, for users prioritizing comfort, ease of use, and a hassle-free experience, the Jabra Elite 10 remains a viable option. Those seeking the best value for their money may find more compelling alternatives.
