Review: Quadroids

av Henric Brandt

In Quadroids, players assist the deranged Roboctopus in his ambition to dominate the galaxy. This is achieved by commanding an army of expendable robots known as Quadroids. Navigate through over 100 challenging levels, avoiding hazards such as acid pools and laser grids. Success hinges on a willingness to strategically sacrifice your Quadroids; a destroyed robot can provide the necessary platform to progress. Adding complexity, gameplay occurs across four simultaneous screens, demanding skillful control with only four buttons to achieve optimal completion times.

Quadroids embodies core elements of engaging platform gameplay: simplicity intertwined with ingenuity. The robots move incessantly, changing direction only upon colliding with an obstacle. With four screens visible concurrently, a Quadroid exiting one screen immediately enters another. As each screen is controlled by separate buttons, this dynamic presents a rapidly escalating challenge.

For instance, initiating a jump in the lower-left screen using the left trigger necessitates an immediate switch to the left bumper upon entering the screen above. Maintaining situational awareness is crucial. While initial levels deploy only a single Quadroid, subsequent stages introduce multiple units simultaneously, demanding parallel management and precise coordination.

Fortunately, Quadroids diverges from the Lemmings paradigm of maximizing unit survival. Instead, strategic sacrifice is key; utilizing robots to trigger traps or create platforms is often essential for progression. The core challenge lies in precise timing, positioning Quadroids at the exact moment required to advance.

The game effectively introduces core mechanics, after which players are tasked with discovering optimal solutions. Every command issued to the Quadroids is significant, with efficiency measured by the number of commands and overall completion time. This fosters high replayability as players strive to optimize routes and improve efficiency.

The visuals are vibrant and exhibit a charming retro aesthetic in both style and execution. The music and sound effects complement the gameplay perfectly.

A minor drawback is the significant increase in difficulty following the initial tutorial, which can initially feel overwhelming. However, overcoming these challenging levels provides a rewarding sense of accomplishment, so persistence is advised.
