Review: Anker Soundcore Space One

av senses.se

Anker Soundcore is often praised for delivering feature-rich and relatively affordable headphones. While not every product has been a complete success, there’s typically been a standout feature that impresses. In this review, we’re examining the Anker Soundcore Space One. Soundcore’s over-ear headphone lineup has expanded considerably, offering a variety of options across several price points. The Soundcore Space One is positioned as a more budget-friendly option, with the battery-optimized Soundcore Space Q45 being the premium model. Let’s delve into whether this more affordable alternative delivers a compelling experience beyond its attractive price.

First Impressions of the Soundcore Space One

The Space One presents an elegant aesthetic, characterized by understated contours, a subtle logo, and comfortable ergonomics. Visually, differentiating it from the Space Q45 might require close inspection (a trait common to several of Soundcore’s over-ear headphones). Its appearance belies its price point, potentially giving the impression of a more premium product. The package includes a functional carrying case, a 3.5mm audio cable, a USB-C to USB-A cable, and of course, the headphones themselves.

A Comparison with the Soundcore Space Q45

A price difference of approximately 500 kronor separates the Space One and the Space Q45. While differences exist, they are not substantial. One notable difference is a reduction in battery capacity of approximately 10 hours. However, context is important. Both headphones offer above-average battery life. The Space One provides 55 hours of playtime (without ANC), compared to the Space Q45’s 65 hours. As noted in our Space Q45 review, this equates to a full work week plus commute time. The Space Q45 includes a hard case, while the Space One comes with a bag. The hard case offers better protection, but the bag is more compact. Ultimately, the choice depends on personal preference.

Both headphones share the same codecs, driver unit, and app (with a minor addition for the Space One, detailed later). Both also feature a 3.5mm input. Overall, core features are consistent, but the Space One distinguishes itself in sound performance and other specific details.

The Soundcore Space One Audio Experience

We’ll begin with identified limitations: the soundstage exhibits a slight lack of width and depth. While not a critical flaw, certain tracks can feel confined, lacking a fully immersive experience. Furthermore, the midrange exhibits some muddiness, particularly in the upper bass frequencies. However, these are not deal-breakers. Overall, a limitation in the general soundstage is noticeable, which is understandable given the price point.

So, does it deliver good sound?

Yes, it does. The Soundcore Space One performs admirably across most genres. Its limitations are most apparent with acoustic music, such as Dave Weckl – Dis´ Place This or Alan Jackson – Drive. While still enjoyable, the full richness of these genres isn’t realized. However, when playing tracks like Alok – Headlights, the soundstage feels complete and well-defined.

In summary, the sound quality is generally good, but it lacks the captivating quality required for a top rating. Soundcore’s app offers a comprehensive library of preset EQs, allowing users to experiment and find their preferred sound profile (a selection is displayed in the image). As with all other Soundcore headphones we have tested, we opted for Soundcore’s signature EQ for our evaluation.

Easy Chat Functionality

Soundcore’s app, which provides extensive customization options, includes a smart transparency mode called Easy Chat. This feature enables quick, temporary activation of transparency mode via two methods: placing your left hand on the left earcup, or configuring the headphones to activate transparency upon detecting speech. In the first option, transparency disengages when you remove your hand. In the second, it remains active for approximately 5 seconds after you stop talking, before the music resumes and noise cancellation reactivates. Easy Chat is a genuinely useful and intuitive feature, characteristic of Soundcore’s design approach.

A feature absent in the Space Q45 but included in the Space One is auto-pause. This function automatically pauses music playback when the headphones are removed. While not groundbreaking, it’s a common convenience feature, and its inclusion is a welcome addition.

Noise Cancellation Performance

The noise cancellation offers two modes: Adaptive Noise Cancelling and Custom Noise Cancelling. The adaptive mode analyzes ambient noise and dynamically adjusts the level of noise cancellation to minimize ear fatigue while effectively blocking distractions. With music off, finger snaps are barely audible. With music playing, environmental sounds are effectively eliminated. While not as dramatic as the Sony WH-1000XM4, the Space One delivers commendable noise reduction. The second mode provides static noise cancellation with five selectable levels.

Not Ideal for Train Travel…

During train travel, we observed that the Soundcore Space One exhibited noticeable sensitivity to pressure changes, a common occurrence on trains. This became distracting to the point where we switched headphones. While we haven’t tested the Space One on an airplane, we anticipate that consistent cabin pressure would mitigate this issue. Indeed, the headphones performed well in environments such as a laundry room, a commuter ferry (with minor interference when doors closed), and on the street. However, train travel proved to be a less suitable environment for the Space One’s noise cancellation capabilities.

Conclusion: Anker Soundcore Space One

Considering its price point of 1,000 kronor, the Soundcore Space One is exceptionally capable. It incorporates numerous smart, technical features, offers a respectable soundstage, and provides competent noise reduction coupled with above-average battery life. Despite some limitations, its overall value proposition makes it a compelling option. If you’re seeking a feature-rich, stylish pair of headphones that won’t break the bank, the Anker Soundcore Space One is a strong contender.
