Pepper Grinder is a high-velocity pirate adventure that puts players in the role of Pepper, a seafaring prospector. Her primary tool is the “Grinder”, a powerful drilling apparatus. Pepper utilizes the Grinder to traverse terrain and waterways, piloting machinery and dispatching enemies to reclaim her lost wealth. However, Pepper will face challenges as formidable creatures emerge. Players can collect jewels and riches throughout their journey, exchanging them at shops to enhance Pepper and her equipment, as well as unlocking new pathways on the world map to forge their own adventure.

Pepper Grinder features charming retro-style graphics that evoke a classic feel while delivering a modern experience. Innovation in the platforming genre is challenging, but the developers of Pepper Grinder successfully introduce a novel dimension by allowing players to drill through various surfaces. While drilling mechanics aren’t entirely new, the combination of powering up the drill and using that momentum for skillful ledge traversal provides both engaging and demanding gameplay.

Pepper Grinder offers a fast-paced and enjoyable experience with accessible controls. The difficulty curve is well-balanced, preventing the game from becoming either too simplistic or overly challenging. Collecting gems enables players to purchase upgrades and unlock access to previously inaccessible areas through the drill’s capabilities.

During testing of Pepper Grinder on Nintendo Switch, I observed surprisingly long loading times even in docked mode, despite the game’s relatively simple graphics. The loading times were even more extended in handheld mode, which is a notable drawback as this is my preferred way to play on the Switch. Furthermore, the graphics appeared somewhat condensed and cluttered on the smaller screen, occasionally making it difficult to discern precise details and maintain spatial awareness.

In conclusion, I recommend Pepper Grinder, as its minor shortcomings do not significantly detract from the overall enjoyment. Its affordable price point further enhances its appeal.
