Review: Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro

av Björn Alsborger

We recently evaluated the flagship Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+, and now we turn our attention to its sibling, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro. Beyond the “+” in their names, a cursory glance at the specifications reveals striking similarities. Both feature an appealing screen and camera system, share an almost identical design, and possess the same battery capacity. Key differentiators include storage capacity, price point, processor – the Pro Plus boasts a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, while the Pro utilizes a MediaTek Dimensity 7300-Ultra – and the Pro model’s slower charging speed.

Given the considerable overlap between these two devices, this review will primarily highlight the distinctions. To gain a comprehensive understanding of aspects such as build quality and software, which are consistent across both models, we recommend first consulting our review of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+.

Performance

Photo: MediaTek

The phone is equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 7300-Ultra, a slightly less powerful CPU compared to its counterpart in the Plus model. Is this difference readily apparent? Not in typical usage scenarios. The phone maintains a responsive feel, with smooth operation throughout. Benchmark tests reveal an approximate 10% performance advantage for the Snapdragon chip, and this disparity widens slightly in graphics-intensive tests.

A more tangible difference lies in the Pro model’s 8 GB of RAM, versus the 12 GB found in the Plus. Users multitasking with numerous applications or performing simultaneous app updates may experience some degree of lag. However, the overall performance remains impressive, rarely betraying the phone’s relatively affordable price point.

Battery

Both phones share the same 5110 mAh battery. The MediaTek chipset exhibits comparable battery efficiency to the Snapdragon, resulting in similar, or potentially even slightly improved, battery life compared to the Plus model. Users can expect to get through a full day of use, but likely not much beyond that.

Charging is capped at 45 W, and the charger is not included. A 30-minute charge replenishes approximately 60% of the battery, while a full charge from 0–100% takes just over an hour.

Camera

While the introduction stated that the camera setup mirrors that of the Plus model, and that we would only focus on the differences, our testing revealed a subtle variation in image quality. The chipset plays a role in image processing, which can significantly influence the final output.

As the images illustrate, the output is not identical, despite the shared camera hardware. Photos captured with the Plus model generally exhibit superior sharpness, enhanced contrast, and more accurate white balance. The Pro model’s images also appear to be more heavily compressed.

To assess potential differences in low-light performance, we conducted a night photography test:

The night shots also reveal differences, with the Plus model generally capturing more detail and producing superior images. A recurring observation from our extensive testing is the divergent white balance handling, particularly in marginally lit environments. Observe the adjacent images, captured in immediate succession. The image on the right, taken with the Plus model, exhibits a noticeably more realistic white balance.

Given the identical camera hardware, it is plausible that Xiaomi could address these discrepancies through future software updates. It’s important to emphasize that the images produced by the Pro are by no means poor; however, a direct comparison with its sibling using the same hardware reveals untapped potential.

Conclusion

At the time of this review, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro (8 GB RAM, 256 GB storage) is offered at an introductory price of 3990 kr for a limited period, before reverting to its recommended retail price of 4990 kr. At either price point, the phone offers excellent value, delivering a well-constructed design, IP68 rating, Gorilla Glass Victus 2, satisfactory battery life, and a capable camera system (with room for optimization).

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+, priced at 5990 kr, includes 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, along with slightly enhanced performance and a more refined camera. Potential buyers should carefully weigh the features of each model to determine the best fit for their needs. However, particularly at the introductory price of 3990 kr, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro earns our strong recommendation.
