Review: Steelseries Arctis Nova 3P Wireless

av Cenny Bjurvén

As a long-time enthusiast of SteelSeries headphones, I was particularly interested in the release of the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3P Wireless. Positioned within the budget segment, this headset aims to deliver an accessible wireless gaming experience with a focus on enhanced audio quality for both PC and console gamers without incurring significant cost.

Design & Comfort

The design is initially acceptable, though somewhat lacking in premium aesthetics. Upon handling the headset, the plastic construction is immediately apparent. The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3P Wireless doesn’t quite match the more refined feel of, for example, the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7. However, the material selection contributes to a lightweight and surprisingly comfortable fit. The AirWeave ear cushions and flexible headband perform adequately, although extended use (several hours) can lead to some clamping pressure, necessitating occasional breaks. In terms of controls, SteelSeries maintains a minimalist approach with an ON/OFF button (which also handles 2.4 GHz/Bluetooth switching), a volume control, and a microphone mute button. While functional, the absence of a dedicated physical EQ control for quick chat/game audio balance adjustment is a notable omission. Despite the more economical materials, it represents a reasonable trade-off considering the target audience seeking an affordable gaming headset solution.

Performance & Sound

Connectivity is straightforward, offering both Bluetooth and a 2.4 GHz dongle for a near “plug and play” experience. The Nova 3 boasts a commendable battery life of up to 40 hours of active gaming. Furthermore, its fast-charging capability provides up to 9 hours of additional use with just a 15-minute charge.

In terms of audio performance, the Nova 3 delivers a surprisingly impressive experience for its price point. The soundstage is wide, detailed, and offers considerable power, showcasing the capabilities of the 40 mm neodymium drivers. Activating the 360° Spatial Audio function enhances the in-game sound with a clean, flowing, and clear presentation. Positional audio cues, such as footsteps and weapon sounds, are distinct and well-defined, and environmental effects are reproduced accurately in terms of distance and direction. Further refinement of the sound can be achieved through EQ adjustments within the accompanying app.

The microphone’s performance is adequate, but presents some shortcomings. Despite being marketed with ClearCast Gen 2 and AI noise reduction, communication with other players often reveals a somewhat muffled and unclear voice quality. The microphone also exhibits a tendency to pick up ambient sounds, including controller button presses and fan noise. While suitable for casual gaming, users intending to use the headset for streaming or podcasts may find better alternatives.

Steelseries Arctis Companion

The Companion app feels somewhat limited, particularly given SteelSeries’ emphasis on its sound profiles. While it boasts 266 pre-programmed profiles tailored to different games and genres, a feature that sets SteelSeries apart in the market, practical application can be less straightforward.

To fully utilize the headset’s capabilities and create custom sound profiles, users must download SteelSeries GG – a separate program exclusive to computers. This program enables the creation of advanced sound profiles with EQ and spatial audio settings. However, these profiles must then be manually imported into the Companion app for use on other devices like consoles or mobile phones.

This process introduces unnecessary complexity. Even within the budget-friendly scope of the Nova 3 Wireless, integrating this functionality directly into the Companion app would significantly streamline the user experience. As it stands, it presents a technical hurdle that could be easily avoided.

Brief Summary

The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3P Wireless offers compelling audio performance within its price range, though it necessitates compromises in build quality and user-friendliness. Addressing the software limitations and microphone quality could elevate it to a leading choice in the budget segment. Given the identified strengths and weaknesses, the overall assessment is a qualified recommendation.
