Review: Super Smash Bros (3DS)

av senses.se

There’s enduring appeal in the hypothetical showdown between fictional characters – who would emerge victorious? It’s a classic debate, reminiscent of childhood discussions: Mike Tyson versus Bruce Lee? Chuck Norris versus Jean-Claude Van Damme? These imaginary battles captivated our imaginations. Following the emergence of films like Battle Royale, which depicted a survival free-for-all, the “party” brawler genre gained traction. Nintendo pioneered this space with the humorous Super Smash Bros. franchise (including iterations like Melée), where iconic characters such as Mario, Luigi, and others engage in combat, up to 4 versus 4, across diverse stages with unique characteristics.

Party brawlers offer enhanced enjoyment through competition against human opponents. The satisfaction derived from defeating a computer, regardless of its AI sophistication, simply isn’t comparable. Therefore, beyond local multiplayer, Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS features online connectivity, enabling players to challenge others using characters such as Sega’s Sonic The Hedgehog and the fan-favorite Little Mac (from Punch-Out!!).

The developers have opted for a stylized visual presentation, and we at senses appreciate the comic book aesthetic and cel-shading. This artistic direction proves effective in this context, although the visuals are most compelling when the camera is zoomed in. When multiple players are widely dispersed across the screen, the camera zooms out to encompass all participants. This can result in a cluttered and diminished view, highlighting the limitations of the 3DS’s screen resolution. The audio comprises a mix of iconic character voice lines and recognizable musical themes from classic Nintendo titles. These elements effectively frame the experience, especially considering the game’s iconic roster from one of the world’s leading game developers over the past 30 years.

Super Smash Bros. delivers a content-rich experience via game cartridge (or a downloadable version available through the eShop). It features numerous game modes, accommodating solo play, local multiplayer, special challenges, collectible trading cards, unlockable characters and stages, and more. This breadth of content is impressive and promises extensive playtime to unlock everything. However, extended engagement is not guaranteed.

The game encounters two primary challenges. Firstly, the 3DS, nearing the end of its lifecycle, struggles to match the technical fidelity of contemporary gaming experiences, even on mobile platforms. Secondly, the online mode exhibits instability. A single player (out of four) with a suboptimal connection can significantly degrade performance, reducing the framerate to levels that impede precise gameplay. Local multiplayer fares only marginally better. Notably, each player requires their own copy of the game, and the system experiences noticeable strain when four players connect via WiFi. Furthermore, while the core gameplay loop of combat and character discovery is engaging, the 2-5 minute matches may become repetitive over extended periods. Despite the allure of unlockable content, the fighting mechanics lack the depth and variation necessary to sustain long-term engagement. Consequently, players may find themselves engaging in shorter play sessions, such as a quick match during commutes.

For enthusiasts of previous Smash installments seeking a portable iteration, this version is a suitable choice. It arguably offers the most substantial content and refined presentation within the series to date. However, it is not the definitive Smash Bros. experience; anticipation remains for the Wii U version, scheduled for release on December 5th. In the meantime, the prospect of playing as Little Mac and battling Kirby on the go holds considerable appeal.
