Review: DC League of Super-Pets

av Henric Brandt

The origin story of Superman (John Krasinski) is well-known, but less familiar is the tale of his faithful dog, Krypto (Dwayne Johnson), who joined him in the escape pod from the doomed planet Krypton. Arriving on Earth, Krypto gains powers similar to his owner, and together they combat crime in Metropolis. When Lex Luthor (Marc Maron) orchestrates the capture of the entire Justice League, the fate of the world rests on Krypto and his newly empowered animal allies. As time dwindles, their only hope lies with the fledgling League of Super-Pets!

DC League of Super-Pets offers several unexpected qualities. It maintains a strong fidelity to the Superman mythos, incorporating the inventive addition of his canine companion. The filmmakers have commendably retained Superman’s classic costume, complete with the iconic outer underpants, and presented it effectively. Krypto himself is not a new invention, having originated in the 1960s. Furthermore, the film transcends the typical children’s movie, providing ample entertainment for adult DC enthusiasts as well.

Moreover, DC League of Super-Pets exhibits surprising emotional depth, exploring mature themes with a refreshing approach in an increasingly streamlined entertainment landscape. The voice acting is consistently excellent, featuring Dwayne Johnson’s commanding presence as Krypto, Kevin Hart as the super-dog Ace, and Kate McKinnon delivering a standout performance as the eccentric guinea pig Lulu. The casting of Keanu Reeves as Batman is a particularly inspired choice!

Regrettably, the UHD version of DC League of Super-Pets is unavailable in Sweden, but the Blu-ray edition remains a viable option. The image is presented in 1080p with a high bitrate, ensuring smooth playback during fast-paced sequences. Colors are rich and vibrant, with no noticeable color bleed between light and dark areas. The climactic battle is particularly visually striking, with a dynamic and colorful presentation.

Despite being a Blu-ray release, the film features an impressive Dolby Atmos soundtrack. The audio quality is uncompromised, rivaling that of a UHD edition. Similar to the visuals, the audio shines during the final battle, immersing the audience in the action with expertly placed sound effects and environmental cues. The audio mix is well-balanced, eliminating the need for constant volume adjustments between dialogue and action sequences. The supplementary material is somewhat limited, although it provides a brief overview of the film’s production.

In conclusion, I recommend DC League of Super-Pets as an enjoyable superhero film that offers a fresh and unique perspective. Be sure to watch through the end credits for an amusing scene that connects seamlessly with another DC film released this year. Perhaps animated features represent the future direction of DC storytelling?
