Review: Maleficent 2 – Mistress of Evil (UHD)

av Henric Brandt

That Disney is producing live-action remakes of its classic animated films is a trend that will likely continue for some time. We at senses.se have reviewed several of these adaptations, ranging from disappointments like Dumbo to more successful ventures such as Aladdin and The Lion King. Maleficent 2 – Mistress of Evil is the sequel to Maleficent, which premiered in 2014. The filmmakers opted for a different approach here, choosing to tell the story from the perspective of the titular character, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie), rather than creating a direct adaptation of the animated Sleeping Beauty (1959). Given the first film’s considerable success, a sequel was anticipated.

Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) is preparing to marry Prince Philip (Harris Dickinson), leading to a meeting with her future in-laws, King John (Robert Lindsay) and Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer). Maleficent’s presence complicates matters, and tensions escalate rapidly. However, appearances can be deceiving, and conflict between humans and the forest’s fantastical inhabitants is imminent.

One of the film’s strengths is Angelina Jolie’s commanding performance. Her presence and charisma are ideally suited for the role of the iconic fairy-tale witch, adeptly portraying both her vulnerabilities and power. Michelle Pfeiffer delivers a notable performance, marking her return to prominent roles (including: Ant-man and the Wasp, Avengers: Endgame). Further details regarding her character’s motivations would reveal too much of the plot.

Maleficent 2 – Mistress of Evil is a visually dynamic film characterized by impressive special effects. However, it lacks some of the emotional depth and captivating elements found in the first installment. Director Joachim Rønning’s emphasis on visual spectacle results in a somewhat superficial experience. Opportunities to evoke stronger emotional resonance are missed due to the direction. Furthermore, a sequence towards the film’s conclusion, involving an organ and a church setting, feels protracted and disjointed. Character decisions appear questionable, and the narrative feels rushed in its attempt to resolve multiple plot threads.

To fully appreciate Maleficent 2 – Mistress of Evil, viewing it in UHD with 4K and Dolby Atmos is recommended, as these features enhance the overall viewing experience and mitigate some of the film’s shortcomings. The image quality approaches three-dimensionality, with exceptional color accuracy and deep blacks. The inclusion of HDR10 further enhances the color palette. While the Dolby Atmos sound is immersive, it could benefit from more impactful bass. The supplementary materials are unusually informative and engaging, featuring several insightful documentaries.

In conclusion, Maleficent 2 – Mistress of Evil is a fast-paced and entertaining film, but it ultimately falls short of capturing the unique charm and emotional impact of its predecessor.
