Review: Asus ROG Claymore II (keyboard)

av Henric Brandt

A high-quality keyboard is paramount, particularly for gaming. Insufficient precision or limitations in simultaneous key press registration can critically impact in-game performance. This review focuses on the new ROG Claymore II from Asus. A notable initial impression upon unboxing is the keyboard’s substantial weight. Unlike gaming mice, a heavier keyboard is generally preferred for stability during intense gaming sessions. This flagship from ASUS for 2021 presents a strong initial impression.

With the unit unboxed, testing can commence. An immediately compelling feature is the detachable numpad, which offers configurable connectivity on either the left or right side of the keyboard. Alternatively, the numpad can be completely removed to reduce the keyboard’s overall footprint. Furthermore, the ROG Claymore II supports both wired (via a braided, tangle-resistant cable) and wireless operation. A full charge provides up to 47 hours of battery life with RGB lighting enabled, extending to approximately 60 hours with the lighting disabled. The remaining battery level is conveniently displayed via an on-keyboard indicator.

The keycaps feature a concave design. While initially requiring acclimation, this design minimizes the potential for accidental keystrokes. The Asus ROG Claymore II exudes quality and functional design, positioning it within the premium product segment, analogous to their excellent gaming monitor previously reviewed. The keys are rated for 100 million keystrokes and feature pressure-equalizing mechanisms to ensure consistent actuation.

The detachable wrist rest features a stylish leatherette finish and is magnetically secured. Overall, the ROG Claymore II presents a compelling package, potentially warranting a “must-have” designation, though a few details warrant consideration.

The software suite can be somewhat difficult to locate and is exclusively available for PC. While this may not pose a significant issue for many users, given the prevalence of PC gaming, Mac users may find the lack of software support limiting. Furthermore, the multimedia controls are implemented as function keys, requiring simultaneous depression of the Fn key for activation. This can be cumbersome, particularly for single-handed operation. While the numpad offers programmable keys that can be assigned to multimedia functions, users may prefer to utilize these keys for alternative purposes.

In conclusion, the Rog Claymore II from Asus is a commendable gaming keyboard. Its robust construction and comprehensive feature set justify its premium price point, despite a few minor drawbacks.
