Review: Technics EAH-A800

av senses.se

Technics has a long-standing reputation in the electronics market, often associated with high-quality audio equipment. Their products have historically offered unique features, such as vinyl players with automatic track selection and CD players with early implementations of bass-boost technology in the 90s. During our evaluation of the Technics EAH-A800 headphones, we encountered a mix of impressive features and some shortcomings. While certain aspects proved to be highly appealing, others were less desirable and, at times, presented usability issues. This review details both the strengths and weaknesses of the EAH-A800, providing a comprehensive analysis of its performance.

Overall Technics EAH-A800

The package includes an airplane adapter, a USB-C charging cable, and a 3.5mm audio cable, representing a standard accessory set for this product category. The black leatherette-covered carrying case offers adequate protection without being overly bulky.

Comfort is generally good, although the earcups exhibit a degree of stiffness. Note that comfort is subjective and can be influenced by temperature and the headphone’s break-in period. Battery life is rated at 60 hours without ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) or AAC, 50 hours with AAC enabled, and 40 hours with ANC activated. This positions the Technics EAH-A800 among the top performers in terms of battery endurance, comparable to the Anker Soundcore Space Q45.

Playback Modes

The EAH-A800 offers three distinct playback modes: Off, HearThrough, and ANC.

The ANC performance is adequate, effectively reducing monotonous low-frequency sounds and mitigating some impact noises. However, in the Off mode, a significant portion of the perceived silence stems from the headphones’ inherent passive noise isolation due to their snug fit. Activating ANC introduces a noticeable background hiss, akin to distant highway noise, which can make the Off mode subjectively quieter. Consequently, the preferred mode is not always clear-cut. ANC reduces low-frequency disturbances, but compromises the soundstage’s width, pressure, and overall acoustics. The Off mode avoids the sensation of pressure in the ear canals while still providing substantial passive isolation. The lack of a definitively superior mode is a recurring theme with the Technics EAH-A800.

The HearThrough mode, however, performs admirably, rivaling the Sony WH-1000XM4. It allows users to enjoy music while maintaining awareness of their surroundings. Two HearThrough sub-modes are available: Attention and Transparent. Transparent mode allows for manual adjustment of the HearThrough level, while Attention mode functions similarly to Sony’s Focus-on-voice feature.

As a headset for phone calls, the Technics EAH-A800 performs exceptionally well. This capability, emphasized by Technics, holds true in our testing. Callers reported minimal discernible difference compared to using a dedicated microphone, which is commendable.

The Technics Audio Connect App

The Technics Audio Connect app provides extensive customization options for controls and sound settings. Notably, the pre-programmed EQ modes are remarkably well-tuned, enhancing the soundstage for their intended genres.

Regarding controls, the Technics EAH-A800 presents a somewhat inconsistent approach. Unlike the Sony WH-1000XM4 (primarily touch controls) or the Anker Soundcore Space Q45 (primarily physical buttons), the EAH-A800 incorporates both. However, the touch controls for two- and three-tap gestures are limited to playback mode selection (excluding call controls). Other functions are controlled via buttons located on the underside of the headphones, which can be difficult to locate initially, but become more familiar with use.

The menu structure within the app is not entirely intuitive and can be somewhat convoluted. Certain preset functions can also be disruptive. For example, the music may automatically pause when switching from Off or ANC to HearThrough in Attention mode.

In summary, the app offers a wealth of fine-tuning options, but the organization of these options could be improved. The choice of available functions, and the lack thereof, raises questions. Why is touch control flexibility limited, and why isn’t it implemented on both earpads? Why is battery status announced when turning off the headphones? These inconsistencies contribute to the aforementioned recurring theme of minor shortcomings.

The Soundstage – Technics EAH-A800

Having addressed the technical aspects, we now turn to the sound quality. The Technics EAH-A800 delivers a good overall sonic experience, though not flawless. The soundstage presents as somewhat clinical and reserved. While subjective, this accuracy can, to some extent, stifle the headphones’ expressiveness. Notably, the soundstage improves considerably at higher volumes. At lower listening levels, the audio can sound somewhat flat and uninspired, suggesting that the Technics EAH-A800 requires a degree of power to fully realize its potential.

High Frequencies

The high frequencies represent the EAH-A800’s weakest point. We observed a lack of precision and sparkle. In tracks such as Alan Jackson – Drive, clarity and detail are lacking. Similarly, in Agnes Obel – Familiär, subtle articulations and nuances are less prominent than expected. While EQ adjustments can improve treble response, achieving a balanced sound proves challenging. Conversely, the upper bass frequencies are impressively clear and crisp.

Mid-range

In contrast to the high frequencies, the mid-range offers ample warmth and breadth. It provides an engaging and immersive listening experience with a wide acoustic panorama. Air – La Femme d´argent delivers a captivating experience, highlighting the intricacies of the looping melodies. The mid-range also demonstrates power and clarity in tracks such as Hans Zimmer’s – Buyer Beware.

Low Registers

The bass frequencies exhibit both pressure and depth. However, a degree of muddiness is present in the upper bass range, around 300 Hz. Using Hans Zimmer’s – Buyer Beware as an example, the powerful accents around 1:55 can evoke a somewhat tinny sound instead of pure power and impact. Reducing the EQ level at 315 Hz alleviates some of this issue, but does not eliminate it entirely, and also results in a reduction in bass response.

The Overall Soundstage – Technics EAH-A800

With EQ adjustments, the soundstage becomes more vibrant. Greater control over the EQ would likely allow for complete elimination of the muddiness in the bass, which represents the primary sonic weakness. This contrasts with the treble, which is more easily corrected via EQ. The Technics EAH-A800 delivers good sound, but falls short of being exceptional, particularly given its price point. At around 3,500 kronor, several strong competitors offer a cleaner and more refined soundstage straight out of the box.

Conclusion – Technics EAH-A800

We are impressed by the flexibility, battery life, and, with some EQ adjustments, the overall sound quality. However, other aspects are less convincing, resulting in a somewhat mixed overall impression. Ultimately, the Technics EAH-A800 faces stiff competition in its price range. The Sony WH-1000XM4, renowned for both sound quality and ANC, is currently available for approximately 3,000 kronor. For those prioritizing battery life, the Anker Soundcore Space Q45, with its 65-hour battery, represents a compelling and more affordable alternative.

The Technics EAH-A800 falls short of receiving our top recommendation. We found ourselves missing the sense of innovation and inventiveness that has characterized Technics’ previous successes.
