In 2013, Shanti was recognized as Europe’s best Asian restaurant for the second consecutive year. The restaurant offers authentic Indian cuisine, prepared using traditional methods rather than adapting to local Swedish preferences. In Bangladesh, the cuisine emphasizes fish, lamb, and vegetarian dishes, contrasting with the prevalence of chicken tikka in Sweden.
The interior ambiance is inviting, characterized by warm color palettes, adorned walls, and closely arranged tables. The restaurant is typically bustling, with attentive waitstaff. On this late summer evening, we opted for seating on the outdoor terrace, benefiting from the provided heat lamps and blankets, which created a comfortable environment.
The menu presents a diverse selection of dishes, catering to preferences for lamb, fish & seafood, poultry, and vegetarian options. Patrons can choose from appetizers, street food, tandoori grill specialties, fried cheese preparations, Bengali home-style dishes, and Tikka selections, among others. Appetizers are priced between 60-80 SEK, main courses range from 165-215 SEK, and desserts are available for 40-85 SEK.
Our order included the vegetarian Paneer Veg Korma, featuring fresh cheese in cashew nut sauce (165 SEK), and “Touch of Markus”, a chicken dish crafted by chef Marcus Aujalay, accompanied by coconut sauce, lemon, and naan (195 SEK). To complement the meal, we ordered two Cobras (Indian beer, 85 SEK for 66 cl), which were served promptly. The beer, while somewhat light, paired well with the food.
Approximately fifteen minutes later, we received silver trays with rice, salad, mint and mango chutney, lentil soup, and raita, all included with the main courses. The stews were then served, presenting appealing aromas.
Both dishes presented a mildly sweet flavor profile. The Touch of Markus was particularly noteworthy, exhibiting an engaging balance of sweet and sour elements that stimulated the appetite. The vegetarian Paneer Veg korma, however, was considered excessively sweet and less distinctive.
Shanti occupies a position within the lower segment of the mid-range price spectrum. While the menu offers a wide array of choices to accommodate diverse palates, the correlation between the moderate pricing and the overall dining experience is discernible. Shanti remains a reputable Indian restaurant in Stockholm, though it faces competition from more upscale and specialized establishments in the mid-range category.
