Review: Bayonetta + Vanquish 10th Anniversary Bundle

SEGA presents a double feature, bringing together two action titles from Platinum Games on Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

Bayonetta

The action heroine and Umbra Witch, Bayonetta, has appeared in numerous iterations across console and PC platforms. While there are currently only two main installments, these titles have been re-released across multiple formats. The gameplay mechanics draw inspiration from Devil May Cry’s action, collection, and upgrade systems, alongside the large-scale boss encounters reminiscent of the original God of War games. The influence of DMC is notable, as Hideki Kamiya, the creator of Devil May Cry, is also a key figure in the development of Bayonetta. This action title remains engaging and relevant even today.

Bayonetta PS4

Bayonetta debuted a decade ago on the previous generation. The Xbox 360 version showcased fluid 30fps action, while the PS3 version experienced performance issues, struggling to maintain a consistent framerate. The Xbox 360 version remains playable on Xbox One via backwards compatibility and arguably has the lowest input latency due to its lower resolution (720p) and less demanding visual effects. This remaster presents Bayonetta in high resolution for the first time. The PS4 Pro and Xbox One X versions both render at 1440p, resulting in a sharper image and improved detail. While rumors of 4K (2160p) or at least 1600p resolution were circulating, the final output is still a noticeable improvement. The base versions operate at 1080p, and all console versions largely maintain 60fps, with the Xbox One X demonstrating the most stable performance, closely followed by the PS4 Pro.

Bayonetta Gomorrah
Huge boss fights? Check.

Bayonetta is a quintessential action title that remains compelling and is highly recommended for fans of Devil May Cry (especially later entries). For newcomers, this is an opportune moment to experience the game in its most refined form to date. Even for returning players, Bayonetta offers a rewarding replay experience.

Vanquish

Shinji Mikami‘s (Resident Evil creator) third-person shooter, Vanquish, has garnered a dedicated following despite not achieving widespread commercial success upon its initial release during the PS3 era. Unlike Bayonetta, which has seen numerous re-releases on various platforms, Vanquish remained relatively obscure following its initial launch, aside from a PC port. The PS3 presented unique development challenges, impacting Vanquish‘s technical performance. This cover-shooter, reminiscent of Gears of War, delivers a satisfying gameplay experience. While a straightforward playthrough may be completed relatively quickly, the game’s depth lies in its open-ended approach and strategic combat.

Vanquish
Crazy intense shooting action in Vanquish.

Vanquish shares similarities with Bayonetta, particularly in its incorporation of slow-motion mechanics (AR, analogous to Witch Time). However, Vanquish presents a greater challenge and more open-ended gameplay, potentially comparable to a high-speed Gears of War or a third-person Destiny. The game is characterized by its intense action; the boost and cover mechanics are effective, though occasionally demanding; and features large-scale boss encounters. Vanquish requires a more strategic approach from the player, offering a compelling complement to Bayonetta for those seeking a challenging action experience. The shared pedigree of Platinum Games is evident in the quality of the action gameplay.

The PS4 Pro version delivers acceptable performance, but is not without its shortcomings. While the game largely maintains 60fps, the framerate noticeably drops during first-person perspectives. The 30fps cutscenes can appear somewhat dated due to static backgrounds and simpler textures. Shadow rendering can also be inconsistent. The Xbox One X version demonstrates more stable and consistent performance. Platinum’s history with the Xbox platform may be a contributing factor.

 Vanquish Xbox One X

Summary

This bundle offers two classic action games in enhanced versions at a reasonable price. Bayonetta is an essential title for action game enthusiasts, while Vanquish may represent a new experience for many. The enhanced versions offer improved performance, especially on the Pro and X consoles; however, there is potential for further enhancements in future iterations via machine learning on the upcoming Xbox Series X and PS5 (both expected to offer backwards compatibility, with Series X supporting all previous Xbox generations).

Those with an interest in the DMC or Gears of War genres, or simply intense action games, should consider acquiring this tenth-anniversary edition. It comes highly recommended, although existing Bayonetta owners on other formats may find the improvements incremental. The base hardware of the PS4 (Slim) and Xbox One S are beginning to show their age as the next generation approaches, while the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X provide an enjoyable experience with the best versions of these action classics available (to date).
