Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles originated as a comic book in 1984, with initial storylines characterized by a darker, more graphic tone. Three years later, the classic TV series debuted, presenting the ninja turtles in their now-familiar form. Notably, in Europe, the series was rebranded as Teenage Mutant HERO Turtles due to concerns that the term “Ninja” was too violent for younger audiences. As a ten-year-old at the time of the TV series premiere, I was immediately captivated. The release of the first (and arguably the best) feature film in 1990 solidified my lifelong fandom.

The first video game adaptations appeared in 1989, with titles released for the NES and as an arcade game. Lacking a Nintendo console at the time, I frequented the arcade version, investing a considerable amount of pocket money! Since then, numerous iterations of Turtles games have been released across various platforms.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredders Revenge revisits its arcade origins, offering a nostalgic retro experience. Developed by DotEmu, known for their expertise in retro revivals, as demonstrated by their work on Streets of Rage 4 and Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap, the game features stylish and detailed graphics. Each level is replete with engaging details; observing enemy behaviors before attacks provides an example of this meticulous design.

The game supports up to six simultaneous players in both online and local co-op modes. A notable addition in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredders Revenge is the inclusion of April and Splinter as playable characters. Each character possesses unique strengths and weaknesses; for instance, characters may exhibit high strength at the cost of slower movement, or prioritize speed and agility, requiring more frequent attacks to defeat enemies.

Despite the stylish and polished presentation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredders Revenge, the core gameplay experience remains paramount. While each character theoretically offers distinct attributes, the gameplay, typical of many side-scrolling beat’em-ups, tends toward button-mashing rather than strategic combat. Executing special moves can be challenging, often resulting in being overwhelmed by enemies. This unfortunately contributes to a degree of repetitiveness in the overall game experience.

In conclusion, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredders Revenge is a recommended title. It provides an enjoyable and nostalgic experience, with retro aesthetics that enhance the overall gaming enjoyment.
