Review: Gungrave G.O.R.E.

av Henric Brandt

In Gungrave G.O.R.E. (Gunslinger Of REsurrection), players assume the role of Grave (formerly Brandon Heat), an anti-hero armed with the Cerberus pistols. Similar to protagonists in titles like Devil May Cry, Grave benefits from unlimited ammunition, allowing him to dispatch hordes of enemies with relentless gunfire. The gameplay features a blend of violent action and stylized precision, as players navigate various missions. The game presents a distinct visual aesthetic, drawing inspiration from both classic Western gunslinger motifs and Eastern anime influences.

Gungrave G.O.R.E. represents the second installment in the Gungrave reboot, following Gungrave VR. Originating on the Playstation 2, the reboot is now available across multiple platforms. The gameplay in Gungrave G.O.R.E. utilizes a third-person perspective. While the graphics are generally well-executed, the animations exhibit a somewhat simplistic and dated quality.

The AI of the enemies is rudimentary; they advance in predictable waves, requiring players to eliminate them before they overwhelm Grave. Each mission largely follows a similar structure: progress from point A to point B, eliminating all opposition. Although the action is visceral and graphic, the repetitive nature of the gameplay can lead to tedium. The primary challenge stems from the sheer volume of enemies encountered, rather than strategic complexity or diverse enemy types. As such, the difficulty leans more towards endurance than demanding skillful play.

Testing of Gungrave G.O.R.E. was conducted on an Xbox Series S, with no observed issues related to loading times or overall performance. The game offers two graphics modes: one prioritizing maximized graphics at 30fps, and another targeting 60fps with reduced graphical fidelity. The 60fps mode was selected for testing, as the graphical difference was minimal, and the smoother framerate enhanced the gameplay experience.

Despite its visual merits, Gungrave G.O.R.E. ultimately falters in delivering a compelling and engaging gameplay experience. The rapid onset of boredom significantly impacts the overall assessment.
