Review: Panasonic EH-NA0J (hair dryer)

av senses.se

Is a hair dryer truly worthy of a detailed review? At first glance, it seems like a simple device: a fan directing heated air. While that may have been true historically, significant advancements continue to be made in this product category. Features such as “overheating sensors” and a “skin-moisturizing mode” piqued our interest at senses.se. We initially assumed that high-performing hair dryers primarily delivered substantial airflow and heat, albeit with varying attachments. While that remains a core function, it’s no longer the only consideration.

A Heat Source with Versatile Attachments

In essence, a hair dryer delivers heat. However, the Panasonic EH-NA0J distinguishes itself with multiple modes that influence the final result. One mode, in particular, stood out as our favorite. It even garnered positive feedback from a five-year-old, who appreciated the gentle temperature and the resulting glossy finish.

Let’s briefly examine the included accessories: the hair dryer, a diffuser, and a concentrator nozzle. The diffuser is designed to enhance volume and define curls, while the nozzle provides a more focused airflow for precise styling.

Strengths and Weaknesses Observed

Let’s begin with the design. The EH-NA0J boasts an aesthetically pleasing and stylish design, inspiring a sense of care in handling. This might lead to increased longevity through careful use. However, a specific design element raised some concerns that lingered throughout our testing.

Weighing in at a comfortable 460 grams, the hair dryer feels well-balanced and prevents arm fatigue during use. The generous 2.7-meter cord length ensures ample reach, minimizing the need for awkward positioning relative to power outlets.

One recurring issue was the button placement, which felt slightly out of reach from a natural grip. Changing modes often required a two-handed operation, potentially interrupting the drying process to release the styling brush. While frequent mode switching might be more common during testing than typical use, users will likely settle on their preferred settings, as we did.

We were particularly impressed by the exterior’s cool-to-the-touch design, even after extended use. The absence of hot spots eliminates the risk of burns and allows for immediate storage. This is a significant advantage.

Panasonic EH-NA0J – Feature Overview

The Panasonic EH-NA0J doesn’t deliver the intense heat of some professional salon dryers. However, considering the integrated features, such as sensors designed to prevent overheating, raw heat output may not be the primary performance metric. We assessed the dryer’s performance based on drying speed. This is inherently complex, as factors like hair thickness, length, structure, and type significantly impact drying time. In addition to three airflow strengths, the EH-NA0J offers Warm, Cold, Warm/Cold Alternating, Scalp, and Skin modes. The Scalp and Skin modes warrant further explanation.

The Scalp mode provides gentle scalp care using a higher volume of air at a lower, less intense temperature. This mode became a favorite for both our team and our 5-year-old junior tester. The experience was gentle, effective, and seemingly the fastest, potentially due to the absence of pauses. The Scalp mode offered better control and reduced complaints from our 5-year-old tester, whose candid feedback is always valuable.

The Skin mode utilizes nanoe MOISTURE+ and Mineral technology to moisturize the face. This technology claims to generate 1800% more moisture and increase hair humidity 1.9 times more than standard nanoe technology. However, in the interest of full transparency, a core tenet of senses.se, we did not observe a noticeable moisturizing effect. It primarily felt like warm air blowing on the face.

The claim that the airflow used for drying hair contains a higher proportion of moisture also required careful consideration. We concluded that Panasonic likely intends to convey that the hair retains more of its natural moisture when using this function, which is plausible. However, we did not detect a significant difference in practice.

Finally, regarding the attachments, the focusing nozzle proved to be overly precise, making it challenging for self-use but effective on our junior tester. The diffuser felt undersized, requiring frequent repositioning that disrupted natural curls. Given the Panasonic EH-NA0J’s powerful airflow, a larger diffuser variant would likely perform well.

Conclusion – Panasonic EH-NA0J

The Panasonic EH-NA0J excels at consistently delivering a substantial volume of air at an optimal temperature, gently and effectively drying hair. Despite the somewhat convoluted naming conventions for its features, the end result is commendable. The dryer feels comfortable to use, and overheating is not a concern. However, the price of SEK 3,900 feels high. A transport bag and improved accessories (as previously discussed) would be beneficial, along with a potentially higher maximum temperature. Nevertheless, the maximum heat setting was not necessarily the most effective, a testament to the dryer’s built-in technology.

In conclusion, today’s hair dryers incorporate more technology than we anticipated, and this technology demonstrably impacts performance. The Panasonic EH-NA0J’s greatest strength lies in its effectiveness even at lower power settings!
