Review: Sylvio – Black Waters

av Henric Brandt

Sylvio: Black Waters immerses players in an enigmatic world where they assume the role of a stranger who discovers a peculiar device. This device grants the ability to listen to the voices of spirits who once inhabited this realm. The device intercepts the voice of a man identifying himself as Lee, claiming to be the planet’s sole survivor, who offers clues that gradually unveil the truth about the player’s surroundings.

Sylvio: Black Waters establishes a compelling and mysterious atmosphere from the outset. Players are immediately thrust into the game’s core, sharing the protagonist’s initial confusion. The clues, while not overtly challenging to locate, offer enough ambiguity to allow for diverse interpretations within the overarching narrative.

The game incorporates interactive televisions that permit rewinding and fast-forwarding footage at variable speeds. This mechanic is crucial for isolating distinct audio fragments, which players must then assemble to uncover further details about the unfolding events. The game world defies conventional gravity, enabling traversal up ladders that can unexpectedly transition into walkable surfaces.

Players utilize a watch to scan their environment, and later in the game, acquire a specialized weapon for defense against spectral entities.

Sylvio: Black Waters is currently available exclusively on PC. The game’s graphical demands are relatively modest, requiring only 4 GB of RAM and a Geforce 960, or equivalent, to achieve optimal performance.

A notable drawback of Sylvio: Black Waters lies in its somewhat cumbersome game mechanics. On occasion, objectives can be missed due to stringent positioning requirements. Furthermore, the inability to navigate narrow spaces between walls can lead to frustration. The game’s pervasive darkness can also obscure critical pathways; in one instance, a tunnel concealed within the mountainside was easily overlooked, resulting in extended periods of aimless wandering.

In conclusion, Sylvio: Black Waters presents a compelling and unique gaming experience. However, the unrefined game mechanics detract from the overall enjoyment and can lead to unnecessary player frustration.
