Review: Drakar och Demoner – Monsterboken (Roleplaying Game)

av Henric Brandt

Drakar och Demoner: Monsterboken (Dragons and Demons: The Monster Book) represents a new iteration of the classic bestiary originally published for the 1980s edition of Drakar och Demoner. Following last year’s revival of the Drakar och Demoner role-playing game, this expansion provides a wealth of content, detailing 63 distinct creatures and peoples suitable for inclusion in your campaigns. The book also furnishes numerous adventure ideas and supplementary guidance for game masters.

As previously mentioned in my review of the core rulebook, I hold a particular fondness for Drakar och Demoner, making the opportunity to delve into this enhanced edition of the Monster Book especially gratifying.

Drakar och Demoner: Monsterboken is a well-crafted, 148-page volume, with each double-page spread dedicated to a unique creature or people. Entries provide a comprehensive description of the subject’s lore and capabilities, a concise breakdown for its implementation in-game, and a high-quality illustration. Of particular note are the short descriptions detailing sample random encounters and the “adventure seed” prompts. These inclusions facilitate the effortless creation of engaging scenarios, reducing the burden on the gamemaster.

As stated, the book encompasses 63 distinct creatures, ranging from trolls to dragons, and from undead entities to merfolk. This serves as a compelling supplement to the core Drakar och Demoner experience, offering extensive possibilities for gameplay. The clear layout of each page ensures ease of use, streamlining the process of incorporating new creatures without excessive rulebook referencing.

In conclusion, a rating of must-have is warranted. Similar to the core role-playing game, Drakar och Demoner: Monsterboken exhibits strong production values, a logical structure, and excellent readability. The only potential drawback is its physical size; some may prefer the smaller, more compact format of the original edition.
