TL;DR
Thinking of picking up Hotel Transylvania 3 on Blu-ray? While the English voice cast is a definite improvement over the Swedish dub, the film itself unfortunately doesn't bring much monster-sized excitement. The Blu-ray boasts excellent picture and sound quality, and there are fun bonus features like short films and sing-alongs that add value for physical media fans. However, the overall experience is described as a disappointment, lacking energy and failing to impress even with the original audio. Discover if the visual and audio upgrades are enough to redeem the film's lackluster story.
This summer, we published a Swedish review of Hotell Transylvanien 3 – En monstersemester following its theatrical release. Now, the film has arrived on Blu-ray, providing an opportunity to experience it in its original English. As noted in the theatrical review, the dubbing seemed to detract from the film, as the Hotell Transylvanien series benefits significantly from the comedic timing and personalities of the American voice actors.
Upon inserting the disc and selecting the English audio track, the expectation was for a significant improvement. However, Hotell Transylvanien 3 unfortunately suffers from a pervasive lack of energy, giving the impression that the creative team themselves were on vacation. Ultimately, the film is disappointing.
Technically, the Blu-ray presentation is proficient. The transfer exhibits excellent visual fidelity, with sharp details and vibrant colors, typical of animated features. The audio track delivers robust sound, effectively utilizing a home theater system. Dialogue clarity is also maintained when played through standard television speakers. Regrettably, logistical constraints prevented us from evaluating the UHD 4K edition, which is our preferred format. The disc includes supplemental content, such as two short films, sing-along videos, and other features. While primarily geared toward a younger audience, the inclusion of extra material enhances the value proposition of owning a physical copy.
In conclusion, Hotell Transylvanien 3 – En monstersemester fails to impress, irrespective of the language in which it is viewed. While the English version offers marginal improvements, they are insufficient to alter the initial negative assessment.
