Valentine’s Day Movie: Crazy Rich Asians

av senses.se

The romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians garnered significant attention in the USA in 2018. Based on the novel of the same name, the film distinguishes itself as the first major studio (Warner Bros) production with a predominantly (99.9%) Asian cast. This was particularly well-received within the large Asian population in the USA, resulting in a notable box office success (worldwide revenue of $240 million against a $30 million budget). This parallels the impact of Black Panther, which similarly featured a predominantly Black cast in principal roles, a groundbreaking move for a mainstream Marvel film.

Rachel Chu (portrayed by Constance Wu), a New York professor, begins dating Nick Young (Henry Golding), a highly sought-after bachelor within New York’s Asian social circles. Unbeknownst to Rachel, Nick hails from one of Singapore’s wealthiest families. When Rachel accompanies Nick to a friend’s wedding in Singapore, she witnesses the true scope of wealth in this affluent nation and confronts the complexities of family dynamics that often overshadow romantic relationships.

Crazy Rich Asians initially unfolds at a measured pace, and the premise that Nick Young’s identity and family background are universally known, except to Rachel, requires some suspension of disbelief. However, the narrative quickly gains momentum, revealing Singapore as a vibrant and multifaceted setting populated with memorable characters (including Awkwafina) and subtle antagonists (particularly Nick’s mother, played by renowned Chinese actress Michelle Yeoh). The latter half of the film successfully blends romance, excitement, and emotional depth. Overall, Crazy Rich Asians presents itself as a visually appealing and classically structured romantic comedy, avoiding excessive clichés. Henry Cho (of Hangover fame) provides moments of cultural humor, though a deeper exploration of cultural clashes between tradition and modernity, similar to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, might have further enhanced the narrative.

The Blu-ray edition offers a visually satisfying experience, showcasing the vibrant colors of Singapore. One can only speculate on the enhanced visual impact, particularly the neon colors and contrasts in night scenes, that a UHD 4K release might have provided (which Warner Bros. has not made available in Sweden). The supplemental materials are somewhat limited but include an insightful featurette detailing the film’s casting process and its adaptation from the source novel, as well as a gag reel featuring on-set moments of levity.

Crazy Rich Asians may encounter challenges in attracting a broad audience outside of the USA and Asia, which would be unfortunate. In Sweden, the film did not receive a theatrical release. While familiar and respected actors undoubtedly generate interest, the film should not be judged solely on the basis of its cast. It is important to acknowledge that the quality of a film is independent of the ethnicity of its creators and performers—representation does not inherently determine a film’s merit. While Crazy Rich Asians centers on Chinese individuals in Singapore and the American diaspora, its underlying themes resonate with any well-crafted dramedy and should appeal to viewers who appreciate the genre. It is, in essence, a contemporary Cinderella story set against a captivating, oriental backdrop. More compelling premises are difficult to imagine.
