Headphones are a critical component of the audio experience. Sound plays a more significant role than many realize, prompting us to evaluate whether our current reference headphones – the Plantronics RIG 600LX – could be surpassed by the considerably more affordable Ironn GXT 430 from Trust.
Upon unboxing the Ironn GXT 430, the initial impression is one of robustness. Despite their substantial size, the headphones exhibit a lightweight feel (notwithstanding their 375-gram mass) and provide a comfortable fit on the head and around the ears. Extended usage over several hours proved comfortable. A minor drawback is the metal frame connecting the earcups; accidental contact can produce a noticeable resonance, which may be undesirable.
The audio quality is characterized by clarity and crispness. However, a deficiency in bass response was observed, somewhat unexpectedly given the larger 50mm drivers (compared to the more common 40mm) within the earcups. During gaming, the impact of bass is often desired, and its relative absence is a notable characteristic. While the sound is not inherently weak, it lacks a certain depth and presence.
The microphone is integrated into one of the earcups, offering adjustable positioning via a swivel mechanism. Its size can feel somewhat obtrusive, and the proximity to the nose may be a minor inconvenience when donning the headphones. However, the microphone’s audio fidelity is commendable, with no reported issues during online gaming sessions or phone calls.
The headphones were tested across multiple platforms, including Xbox One X, Nintendo Switch, iPhone 7, and MacBook Pro, functioning as expected on each device. A dedicated volume control is present on the side of one earcup. It is advisable to transmit a strong (but not maximum) audio signal from the source device and then fine-tune the volume using the headphone control.
The omission of an inline remote for phone control is a noteworthy absence. While the Ironn GXT 430 is primarily positioned as a gaming headset, the inclusion of this feature is increasingly common and adds versatility.
In conclusion, the Ironn GXT 430 retails for approximately 600 SEK, offering a robust and comfortable gaming headset. The reduced bass response may be a limiting factor for some users. However, the headset’s other strengths warrant consideration as a viable option within its price bracket.
