Review: New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Switch)

by senses.se

TL;DR

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe brings a classic 2D Mario experience to the Switch with sharper graphics, new characters like Toadette (who can become Peachette with Peach's glide!), and helpful assist features. It offers plenty of replayability with modes like Boost Rush and Coin Rush, making it a fantastic option for local multiplayer. While the Deluxe version is a polished and complete package, especially if you missed the Wii U original, returning players might find the enhancements don't quite warrant a full-price upgrade. It’s been approximately six years since New Super Mario Bros. U debuted on the Nintendo Wii U. We lauded the game upon its release, appreciating its modern graphical enhancements and multiplayer capabilities applied to a classic platforming formula. The Deluxe version also includes the sequel, New Super Luigi U.

On the Switch platform, the graphics have been further refined, delivering the sharpest and most visually appealing side-scrolling Mario experience to date. The roster of playable characters has been expanded to five: Mario, Luigi, Nabbit, Toad, and Toadette. Toadette introduces an interesting mechanic; via a special crown, she can transform into Peachette, inheriting Princess Peach’s abilities, most notably the glide-jump, a beloved feature since Super Mario Bros 2 on NES. The game incorporates several assistance features, including on-screen tips, solution videos, and the Super Guide, which offers an automated playthrough of levels. For experienced players, the game provides challenges via Boost Rush Mode (time-based courses against the wind), dedicated Challenges, and a Coin Rush Mode.

New Super Mario Bros. U, now subtitled “Deluxe” on the Switch, mirroring Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, feels both improved and, paradoxically, somewhat slower compared to our initial impressions. This isn’t due to performance issues like dropped frames, but rather the game’s pacing and the passage of time. We found playing with detached Joy-Cons to be advantageous, offering a different feel compared to the more precise Controller Pro (similar to our experience with the 2017 game of the year, Super Mario Odyssey). The game offers numerous secrets and challenges, making it a compelling experience, especially in local multiplayer.

Overall, New Super Mario Bros U. remains a solid title. As a 2D Mario game, it fills a gap in the Nintendo Switch library (excluding the NES classics available through the online service). If you missed its initial release on the Wii U, the Deluxe version is a worthwhile acquisition, offering the most complete and polished experience. However, for those who already own the Wii U version, the enhancements may not justify a full-price purchase, despite its refinements.
