Review: Godzilla – King of The Monsters (UHD)

av Henric Brandt

Godzilla – or Gojira, as he’s known in Japanese – first appeared on screen in 1954. Since then, the iconic monster has starred in 28 Japanese films and two American adaptations. The initial American Godzilla film, directed by Roland Emmerich in 1998, deviated significantly from the source material and failed to capture the essence of the original Japanese stories. In 2014, a new American remake was released, which proved to be a more faithful and well-received interpretation, delivering a Godzilla design and narrative that resonated better with fans.

Set several years later, the film depicts a world where the presence of colossal monsters has become commonplace. Dr. Emma Russel (Vera Farmiga) and her estranged husband, Dr. Mark Russel (Kyle Chandler), find themselves on opposing sides in a conflict concerning the Earth’s fate, with their daughter Madison (Milly Bobby Brown) caught in the middle. The emergence of King Ghidorah, a formidable, three-headed Titan with malevolent intent, throws the planet’s very survival into jeopardy.

Regarding whether prior viewing of the 2014 film is necessary to appreciate Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the answer is nuanced. While understanding the immediate narrative of this film doesn’t strictly require prior knowledge, as it features a largely independent storyline and new characters confronting the threat posed by the Titans, familiarity with Godzilla’s established lore and the broader context enhances the viewing experience. Therefore, having seen Godzilla (2014) is recommended, but not essential.

This film delivers a high-octane, visually arresting spectacle of large-scale destruction, providing a classic matinee adventure experience. The core narrative, while straightforward, arguably feels somewhat stretched across the film’s two-hour runtime. However, the sheer spectacle of the Titans clashing amidst widespread devastation offers substantial entertainment value.

Director Michael Dougherty, whose previous work includes the modestly budgeted films Krampus and Trick ‘r Treat, demonstrates competence in crafting the film’s visual and spectacular elements. However, the direction of the actors and casting choices leave room for improvement. Vera Farmiga delivers a reliably strong performance, and Milly Bobby Brown (making her feature film debut) offers a commendable portrayal of her character. The casting of Kyle Chandler in the male lead, however, proves less effective. Chandler’s performance in Peter Jackson’s King Kong involved a parodic depiction of an over-dramatic actor. His similar facial expressions and mannerisms in Godzilla: King of the Monsters create an incongruous and unintentionally comical effect.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters showcases the capabilities of Ultra-HD. The visual presentation is exceptionally sharp, with impressive handling of light, shadow, fire, and water. Colors are vibrant, lending a palpable intensity to the imagery. Furthermore, the Dolby Atmos sound design achieves reference-level quality, surpassing previous films reviewed in its immersive and impactful delivery. The audio experience is not merely loud when required; it operates as a sophisticated symphony, placing the viewer directly within the heart of the action. The supplemental materials are also unusually comprehensive and engaging.

In conclusion, Godzilla: King of the Monsters provides a compelling home theater experience. Godzilla enthusiasts will appreciate the numerous references to the franchise’s history. However, the narrative depth is somewhat lacking, and the film’s focus on setting up future installments (specifically Godzilla vs Kong) detracts from its standalone storytelling. Consequently, despite the exceptional UHD presentation, it’s not necessarily a definitive “must-see.” Nevertheless, viewers seeking a visually stunning and action-packed monster movie should prepare for an entertaining two-hour thrill ride.
